Update Text PSCS 6
I know that when I open a file that contains Layers wich uses fonts that I donīt have installed, a warning message appears.
But what about "update layers"? Never heard of it until today (attach screencap).

If I select "NO" text layers appear as expected (because the necessary font is already installed) but they have a grey warning icon (instead of the usual yellow icon when there is no font).

In order to have those warning icons removed I have to select "UPDATE".

Now, the strange thing is that no matter what I choose (NO or UPDATE) iīm able to edit the text without changing its apperance which is to be expected.

So, why do they have to be updated at all? It makes no sense.
I found nothing about it in the PS documentation.

David

Re: Update Text PSCS 6
It seems Photoshop stores the shape of the font in some way when you place text on a layer, even if you later don't have that font on your system.

But here it's talking about vector output, such as exporting to PDF or to an Illustrator document, which it would have problems doing because it doesn't have access to the original metrics.

Bizarre, yes, but also Photoshop being remarkably helpful!

I understand, yes Steve it makes sense.
Also I didnīt take into account that most likely the original file was created with an earlier version.

I remember now the same thing happened with CorelDraw, because the "text engine" worked differently, it had lots of improvements...and I believe it is exactly the case with PS. (it has character styles now!)
Not to mention that even if have the required font installed it might be another version of the font!

What you mentioned about exporting to PDF brought some of that stuff back to my mind.

thanks
