Question about How to Cheat in Photoshop: CH. 14 Distortion through Glass
I'm a Graphic Design Student and am working on a project for school. My project is based around a Buddhist mantra, with layered images in the background. I drew the letters/words of the mantra in Illustrator. They are written in English but are based on a stylized version of Sanskrit characters. After I drew the words in Illustrator, I imported the phrase into Photoshop as an eps. file. I would love to use the technique in Ch. 14 (p.412) 'Distortion through glass' on the phrase in my project. However, since the words I created in Illustrator and imported in Photoshop are not technically text, but rather objects, I'm not sure how to apply this technique to them. I would like to use the same technique as in the book, but with gold (rather than silver) outlines on the letters. Is this possible? Does anyone have any helpful tips/suggestions as to how I can do this? Thanks for this incredibly fabulous and informative book! Marjorie |

Hi Marjorie. I don't think it matters that your illustrator file is not 'Text'. The technique in Steve's book is applied on the word 'Spy' which is also a flat image (not a text object). When you import an eps file into photoshop it becomes a 'smart object' which needs to be rasterized before filters etc can be applied to it. As for making it Gold instead of Silver, this is explained in chapter 10. If you have problems then you can upload screen shots/ jpgs of your work to here. I really appreciate the useful info! I'll give it a shot, and if I have problems, I'll upload a jpeg. Thanks so much! |

Artwel's advice is spot on. When you import an object from Illustrator, Photoshop will bring it in a s a Smart Object. To turn it into a regular layer, use Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object, then it will turn into plain pixels. By all means, post a jpeg and we can take a look! |
