Edition 6, Chapter 7, p. 164, Step 6
I am steadily going through all the exercises in the book and I have learned a great deal. I am having a problem with one of the exercises and I hope someone can give me some help.

Visible light sources - I can get all the way through the exercise except the last step. I can create the ellipse and feather it as long as I do it in the layer that contains the light (not the lamp) and the light bulb. However, I don't know how to get the ellipse to delete the area from the shadow layer so that the table shows through.

Can someone please help?

Thanks,
Sara

Hi Sara

I'm a bit out of date, only having the CS4 version, but presume you are referring to the lamp on the table tutorial. Must update Steve - promise!.

On the main page of Steve's site you will see videos by chapter and the lamp video is there. This will help seeing it done in practice.

When you draw a selection, it will remain active irrespective of the layer you select however, to make it effective you have to highlight the appropriate layer. In this case, draw the ellipse and feather and then making sure you are on the shadow layer hit delete once. You will find that hitting delete numerous times will lessen the effect of the feather.

Personally I never use delete, as it's rather final and instead use a layer mask, which can be re-edited, but the method used is down to the individual.

You can also save the the selection as a new channel by going to Select - save selection. You can then load the selection at any time, which will save the drawing bit if you make a mistake.

Hope this helps.

Nick

Thank you Nick, I have now bookmarked that sight. Actually, my problem was a reading one. The directions clearly state to use the elliptical MARQUEE tool and I was using the elliptical tool. When I used the right tool, the directions worked perfectly. Duh. Next time I post in here please remind me to read more carefully.

Regards,
Sara
