Making it rain
Hi everybody,

Could anyone help me in this exercise "Making it rain". I am trying to add a leopard on the pavement, but I find it difficult to insert the animal in a realistic way. In my picture, there's something wrong, the color, the perspective.

Could somebody give me a hand ?

Rodolphe

Re: Making it rain
Hello Rodolphe,

I thought your background image was a little washed out, using Brightness / Contrast (Image, Adjustments, Brightness / Contrast) use the gliders to get the effect you find pleasing. Used the Rule of thirds (approximately) to position the beast, reduced the size to keep the perspective, induced a little colour (Image, Adjustments, Hue/Saturation) set to colorise, again use the gliders to get the desired effect. The animals head did not respond well to the colouring, so it was replaced using a brighter one.

Hopefully this may be of some help, please forgive the use of your image.

Thank you James, but I find the leopard too bright now. Too washed out indeed : I will gave a stab at it tonight.

I think the match is quite good. It's close enough not to constitute a major problem.

To me the problem is the lack of either shadow or reflection. Shadows are incredibly important. They are the glue that binds objets to their backgrounds. This image is in soft indirect light so the shadow is going to be very subtle but still essential.

Far more important in the context of this particular image is the absence of a reflection in the rain soaked pavement and road. Although reflections in the pavement are very diffuse, they are very strong and defined in the road. Because the leopard is profile it will be easy to duplicate and invert him to create the reflections. You will need to apply quite a lot of blur in the pavement and much less in the road.

This is just a general pointer. To get much deeper would need a lot of specific instructions. I hope this can at least help you look in the right direction.

Good luck!

Thank you. I have neglected indeed the raindrops on the little ponds.
Regarding the shadow of the leopard something must be done as well...
