Chapter 2 Transformation and distortion. Cappuccino
STEP 1 I use quick selection tool to isolate the cup from its background and the saucer. Then Free Transform to stretch the cup horizontally. But I don't know how to use Puppet Warp to keep the handle undistorted STEP 2 I don't know how to re-use the original saucer STEP 3 The line drawing of the car is complicated, I can't use Magic Wand to select it. I have to use Quick Selection Tool |

Re: Chapter 2 Transformation and distortion. Cappuccino
Hi The Cappuccino item is a Case Study in my version of the book. These are examples of real jobs that Steve has undertaken. They are not meant to have detailed instructions. I read the info and moved on to the next lesson. Angela _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Chapter 2 Transformation and distortion. Cappuccino
Angela is correct, that these Case Studies are meant to be overviews of how I solved real problems rather than tutorials in the usual sense. That said, let's see what we can do… 1. After stretching the cup, the handle will be too wide. Choose Edit > Puppet Warp, and fix a couple of pins on the cup just to the right of the handle. You should now be able to place one or two pins on the handle itself, and drag to make it the same shape it was before. 2. All I mean here is that once you've stretched the cup to change its shape, you can place the original saucer behind it. Erase those parts of the original cup behind the new one at the top, and clone out those that are visible over the saucer. 3. When making complex selections, the trick is often to work backwards. Select the area outside the car with the Magic Wand, then hold Shift and add in the area taken up by the windows. When you've selected all of them, use Select > Inverse so that the car itself is selected. Hope this helps. |

Re: Chapter 2 Transformation and distortion. Cappuccino
In this same example, I was actually wondering about step 6 where you mention isolating the sprinkles into individual dots and creating a merged layer. I was trying to replicate this step but am unsure how you isolated the layer and created a merged copy in this case. As the dissolve isn't an effect I couldn't isolate it to a layer and the car is already it's own layer so I'm confused by the step. Thanks for any clarification. Joe |

Re: Chapter 2 Transformation and distortion. Cappuccino
By "isolate the layer", I mean alt-click on the eye icon in the layers panel so all the other layers are hidden. When you then use Select All, Edit > Copy Merged, and then Paste, you turn the Dissolve effect into regular pixels. I realise this work through is a little under-explained. With these Case Studies I'm taking readers through a real job and explaining my thought processes, rather than necessarily giving a detailed explanation of how to achieve the effects. But do keep asking questions! |

Thank you for the explanation, I just couldn't figure that step out but went on by it. I didn't realize you could actually copy the effect from the layer which is obviously really helpful. |
