Images for Web
Hi all I'm helping a friend with some images for their website. When loaded, they appear too small, but the files were based on existing images already on there, i.e. 1024 x 576 px @ 72ppi I saved a low quality Jpeg (1024 x 1600 px @ 72ppi) to incorporate 3 images and this was around 860k in the 'save as' dialogue and it appears roughly the same size in windows file explorer. However, when opening the file again in PS CC, and going to Image / Image Size, PS is telling me that the file is 5.7M. This applies also to the legacy Save for Web dialogue. The site displays large thumbnails, which then expand into a larger image for viewing properly. I'm not sure if the issue lies in the way they're being uploaded, or the size I'm supplying. I've no experience with web, so any clues would be much appreciated as to why the apparently small file is stated as so large. Regards Nick |

Re: Images for Web
The image size as shown in Photoshop doesn't reflect the file size, but rather the size of the image as a Photoshop document. This ignores any image compression: for example, if I open a 50k jpeg logo in Photoshop it will show it to be over 1Mb. So there's no issue there. What web software is the site built with? It sounds to me as if the default size when placing the image on the page is much smaller - this happens in, for example, WordPress, which routinely creates versions of images at multiple sizes when they're uploaded. If the size was reduced when an earlier image was placed on the page, the size is "sticky" and used as the default size from then on. |

Thanks Steve, that's very useful and I didn't know PS ignored compression. I don't know what web software is used, but it sounds to me that the issue may lie there rather than the Jpegs I've prepared. I know she has a web guru friend, so I'll pass on the information you've provided and they can go from there. Nick |
