Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() I'm having some trouble with lighting, etc on this image and I would love some feedback or direction. Combined 4 separate shots of my neice & nephew. They absolutely love it when I pick on them in Photoshop. Since the first time I turned my neice into the Statue of Liberty (holding her dinner spoon instead of the torch), they've both been addicted to Photochopping. I suppose the most important issue is the lighting direction and reflections. When I darken the highlights, it just turns gray. As it is now, the composition is not at all convincing. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() Inspired by all the help, I thought I'd post some progress. I still haven't begun on the reflections, and I'm not quite sure about the lighting... Let me know if this is going in the right direction... ![]() ![]() |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() To me, Tank, it all looks pretty convincing except for the little boy on the top right..something seems amiss. Could be his arms/hands? |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() Thank you, Tooquilos. Here's what may be the final to the concept.. I added the much needed reflections. I thought a sort of high-key/blown effect gave it a more candid feel like what you would see from an older style camera... I'm still not quite happy with the results, though. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() Lighting's certainly an issue here: the pair in the water are lit from the right, the pair being held up are lit from the left. But I think you could get away with it if you got the scale right: look at the heads, and it's clear that the pair held out of the water are only about 75% the size of the pair holding them up. |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() Thanks, Steve. I noticed that when I originally placed them on the photo. When I scaled the girl up, her head would be cropped off the frame as she would no longer appear to be sitting on her brother's head. So, if I left her as she is and scale the boy up, he would look huge and she would look too small. I then decided to leave them as is, not sure how to fix this without knocking out the background and increasing the vertical size of the canvas with a replaced background. ![]() Needless to say, lesson learned for the next time I photograph them with the intention of picking on them with Photoshop. This is their first week in a new School, so I'll get this printed so they have a cool "break the ice" conversation piece when they are meeting new friends and teachers. |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() If you want to make the canvas taller, that's an easy background to do it with. Increase the size, then select the area above the pool with the rectangular marquee - then simply stretch it to fit. France was excellent, thanks! |

Re: Picking on Niece & Nephew ![]() Another bit you could try is having your niece's feet look like they're in the water. Using her brother's shoulders as a reference point for the water level, I'd say the water would reach just past her ankles. |
