How'd I do?
My friend asked me to clean up his skin and using what I learned about Layer Masks from HTCiP (and Vibeke's help), I came up with this. How'd I do? I think you did a good job, as you haven't made the skin so smooth that it looks unnatural. |

Hope you don't mind but I had a play around with the photo. I duplicated the original photo and used the healing brush on the spotted areas (ALT click sampling a smooth area and "painting over" set to darken where the spots are a lighter colour than the general skin and set to lighten where the spots are darker than the general skin. I backed off the new layer to 85% to let some of the original skin texture bleed through. I selected the eyes and sharpened them with unsharp mask set to screen and 80% opacity (which also brightened them). Finally I applied a curves adjsutment layer over the whole image set to a shallow s-curve to enhance overall contrast. BigVern  |

And by setting the curves adjustment layer to Luminosity mode the increased contrast is maintained but the accentuated colurs are removed.  |

Well, you've certainly improved my improvement. I kept thinking that my version looked blurry...but yours is crisp. I guess my big question is...being relatively new to PS, how would I have known to take your route (which is probably the correct route) as opposed to the one I took (which is probably on the way to the correct route)? I look at the final result of mine and I say to myself that it's certainly an improvement to the original, but I was about 3 or 4 steps short. How would I have known to keep going? And if I thought I needed to keep going, how would I have know what more steps to take? Bob |

Hi Photo57, your photoshopping is good, so don't be hard on yourself. To answer your question ... there is no short route to knowing what to do with photoshop. I have read some books by photoshop gurus such as Steve Caplin, Scott Kelby, Martin Evening or Deke McClelland and watched numerous tutorial videos; many are available free on the net; try looking for davro digital or russell brown from Google. And of course this website is a fantastic resource to pick others brains, so keep asking questions and keep practising. Cheers Bigvern |
