pattern sampler tool for changing text
Hi all

First off How to cheat is psd Cs3 is a great book and I would recommend it even to novices because it is so lucid and interactive.
I am a beginner myself.

I have a logo (see attached) that has 3 letters. I want to change the text into a pattern for which, I did the following,unsuccessfully- as a windows user.

1. Opened a new document side-by-side and defined a pattern.

2. Using the Pen tool, set to paths, I drew a rectangle with equidistant lines inside it.

3. In the current document, I changed text size to its maximum, selected pixels from the text in layer palette(T) until the marching ants are spotted. Then I changed to brush tool and selected the pattern I defined in the other psd. But I don't get the desired output.

I would like the desired output of letters to be as line strokes like tower antennae.

If I sound confused ( which I also feel), please let me know. For instance, all lines should be horizontal in the pattern

Cheers!
Arvind

P.S: If I am not in the right section of the forum or this is not covered, please let me know. I can be contacted at murali.arvind@gmail.com

You don't sound confused at all. I am VERY confused though.

I have no idea what you are asking.

Re: pattern sampler tool for changing text
First off, thanks for replying.

In the picture ( I have a psd version also) there are 3 letters J,T,T created using text tool.

Instead of looking like plain text, i want them to look like insulators of a tower. The picture is that of a tower. It is not a montage because it is a logo.

The text should be replaced by (how to tell!) a pattern by selecting the pixels in the text tool (double-click in the layer palette T)

Th letter "T' obviously does not look good in the attachment. All i want is a general idea about how to make the alphabets as shown (rather obliquely, which should be corrected) in my logo

Cheers!

Hi Arvind,

I'm sorry but I can't understand exactly what you are trying to do here. The image you posted doesn't help much I'm afraid.

Could you do a sketch of what you are trying to achieve and post that?

Gordon

Hi Arvind

Is this what you are trying to create?

Creating the pattern:
1.) First I created a new document on a transparent background: Width: 1px, Height: 4px. This will be a small document so you will need to zoom in.
2.). Then I filled the top half with black and leave the bottom transparent.
3.) Select the document and defined the pattern.

Creating Text:
4.) Type out your text and add the Pattern Overlay Layer Style and choose the pattern that you created.
5.) Now on the text layer bring the Fill to 0%.

I hope this helps. If not let me know.

Luis

Hi Luis
That is the idea! Now this will replace my existing text in the picture in the photoshop logo. Thanks!

Hi GKB
Luis has captured the idea. Actually, I just couldn't write the "T" properly, though.

Cheers!
Arvind

Well done Luis. Now that I see the solution the question becomes clearer!

Glad you finally got your answer Arvind.

Maybe Steve can try creating plugins for styling text in his next book/CD. Or some photoshop actions that can be created with hot keys.

Cheers!

Interesting idea! I'll certainly look into it.

Thanks, Gordon and Luis, for helping out with this one.
