Slice and Dice
I wonder if anybody has an idea how to better split a shape into the layers, such as here:
http://adnrey.deviantart.com/art/Strips-78400873

I would like to split an object into equal stripes, horizontally and vertically, or into squares. Sort of like the puzzle, but to be able to control or recreates the shapes that I am splitting my objects into. Seems to be an important step for many post processing techniques, but I can’t seem to figure this one out.

I also wonder, on the page 342 of the book: is it a sliced model of the flag that was created in Photoshop or it’s a real object? I’ve never found an explanation on that. I wonder if the solution for that would relate to the question I posted.

Thank you!
Tatiana

Re: Slice and Dice
Hi Tatiana
You can create selections using the lasso tools / Pen tool and then copy the elements onto new layers, which can be moved around.

I would guess that the image on the link you posted was created using paths and vector masks.

Here is a simple illustration:-
I've taken a start image from the Friday Challenge and isolated the Lego base, which has been placed on its own layer and transformed to make it larger.

I've drawn 4 random paths with the Pen. Add to path area was ticked. With the paths active, I went to Layer / Vector Mask / Current Path. This will hide the areas outside the path.

The beauty of vector Masks is that they are editable. If you hold CTRL and click on the path, the anchor points will appear and as you move them you will see the masked areas change.

This is a massive subject, but hope this simple example will help you.

Nick

Re: Slice and Dice
Thanks a lot Nick,

It's a very nice detailed explanation - thanks for your time. Yes, that's what I started doing initially when I realized it would take me forever to do that with the human objects.

My objective is to slice my models into equal parts. So, I am almost looking for the means of creating sort of a grid, similar to the one in Transform ---> Warp with the gridlines that can be added and then curved. Then, each segment would be cut off, so no body parts would be missing and the segments are all equal - similar to the example I posted. I hope my explanation is not too vague - I am lost with English words here. I also wonder whether it is doable at all with the current Photoshop Tool Set.

Pen is fine, and I do realize that I do have means in Photoshop tracking the "cut off" part when going at the next. While I realize it's doable and have an idea how to do that, I guess I am looking for lazier, or rather more feasible automated means of accomplishing it. Any ideas on creating "shortcut" are welcome.

Thanks again,
Tatiana

Re: Slice and Dice
P.S. similar to the puzzle pattern here:
http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_pro.cgi?fid=10&topic_id=1142977117

With the exception that I create the slices instead of puzzle pieces, and then just cut the off.

Hope it clarifies the idea.

Thanks,
Tatiana

Re: Slice and Dice
You can create a grid by going to View / grid or press CTRL + '

If you go to Edit / Preferences / Grids, you can set the grid to any measurement with defined subdivisions. In the example I used a 12 X 8 inch file and set the gridlines to 1 inch.

Make sure View / Snap is checked.

Draw a marquee within the gridlines and copy the selection to a new layer. In the example I have cut the cat into slices and transformed three sections, added a bevel and changed the colour so you can see them. Equally you could cut the cat into square chunks.

Alternatively, if you fined a lined pattern, like the jigsaw, you can use the magic wand to select each piece, but you are going to end up with lots of layers!.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Regards

Nick

Re: Slice and Dice
Here is an example of square chunks. By the way I do adore cats, just in case you had any concerns!

Re: Slice and Dice
Thanks a lot Nick!

That was extremely helpful.

Yes, I will be using the grid as per your suggestion. I also think about creating a shape and placing it into the grid or something so I could carve the equal chunks that have curved surface (as opposed to the straight lines of the grid.
".... but you are going to end up with lots of layers!. " ----> RAM is cheap these days !

"By the way I do adore cats, just in case you had any concerns" ---> My immediate concern what the model will say when she sees her chopped.

Thanks again so much for your help - I might post the results in a few weeks.
