Sample Image
Hi Steve,

I did this image the other day ( don’t ask why, I don’t know either ) using two photo's from my digital camera and most if not all of the techniques in the book, which has turned out to be bad by my own standard. The blood looks a little messed up, but looks ok on an A3 size poster.

What I’m looking to do to add effect to this poster is draw in a hood something like the grim reaper!

I have tried cutting other images and distorting it to shape. I have even tried drawing it then shading the contours, but can’t quite achieve what I’m looking for.

What recommendations do you have?

I have reduced the image size in order to maintain the bandwidth, which explains the poor quality resolution.

Thanks Steve.

Re: Sample Image
Paul,

I think you're being much too hard on yourself. The blood is fine, the treatment of the hand and fingernails is excellent, and the work on the face is perfect. The only thing I'd take issue with is the use of the Clouds filter, which has produced too even a pattern. You'd really do better painting the clouds in yourself: use a very large soft brush at a very low opacity, and think in terms of streaks rather than clumps.

Hoods are really tricky to draw. You might start by drawing the outline and adding Burlap texture from the Texturizer filter, then shading with Dodge and Burn - that's the way I've done hoods in the past. But are you sure you want to lose that splendid ear?

Thanks for sharing this with us

Steve

Hi Steve,

I just noticed on my last post that I had mentioned that it had "turned out bad by my own standard". What I ment to say was it turned out not to bad by my own standard .. oops ! ( editing mistake ).

Yeah, I tend to agree with you about the cloud pattern, it also looks to flat with no sense of perspective. I had initially used a black to grey gradient on its own prior to running the clouds filter and it looked fine.

I'll try drawing the outline you recommend and take it from there. I have the full psd so I can always go back. But as you say it's a complex thing to draw so I may just leave it.

Thanks for your input, Steve.

Paul.

Thanks for the comment David, most of this was done using the tutorials in the book. I can't wait for Cheat 2 now !

Yes, HTCiPS2 - The Revenge should be good! I tend to play around with small chunks of the book, like making stacks of different things
or curling £20 notes

That's basically what I've done here and also experimented with dodge and burn tools a bit, something I never did before. !!

What caught my attention with these tools was the tutorial on "Folds And Wrinkles". I was amazed at how real the folds appear.

I also found the levels, hue and saturation, adjustment a handy combination in this case.

I have several books on Photoshop - Photoshop Bible, Most wanted 1 + 2, Photoshop 7 tricks and tips ... but to name a few
and can honestly say in my own opinion - How To Cheat In Photoshop leaves them all standing, the tutorials are just so much more practical and useful. I just can't wait for number 2 !!

Paul.

Well, thanks for all your generous comments. I decided I couldn't hold out on you any longer - so you'll find details of the second edition in the new Second Edition forum on the main page.

Re: Sample Image
This is along the lines of what I was trying to achieve, not great, but it shows the effect I was aiming for

I also tried the streaks as suggested, Steve, and the image seems better for it !

Paul.
