Cracks !
Hi Steve, I'm racking my brain on how to achieve the cracks in stone effect. I'm looking for something similar to the pic I uploaded. I thought this would be fairly easy, but it's turning out to be a nightmare. I have tried loads of things but can't seem to find one that's convincing .. HELP !!! Paul. ![]() |

Re: Cracks !
Very hard to see from that tiny pic! It looks to me like pitted concrete, is that right? So here's a possible solution: 1. Fill the chosen area with a mid grey. You could choose a couple of close greys and apply the Clouds filter if you like, for some added texture. 2. Go into QuickMask, and use a large, soft brush set to Dissolve mode to spray some random splattering. Use a small amount of Gaussian Blur to soften the hard dots. 3. Leave QuickMask and make a new layer from the selection. Use Bevel & Emboss in Layer Styles to add a 3D effect. Does that make sense? Is this the effect you're after? ![]() |

Re: Cracks !
Hi Steve, Yep it is supposed to be pitted concrete but the effect has to be around the scale of the image I posted. I'll have a play around with this and post the results. Thanks again, Paul. ![]() |

Re: Cracks !
Easy enough to reduce the scale afterwards! ...and I think I just got a new tutorial for the next edition out of this one... |

Re: Cracks !
Damn, I did similar this morning but using lighting effects and an alpha channel. I didn't think it was producing the right effect (cracks) so I scrapped it. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Cracks !
Right, I think I have found what I'm looking for! I used a combination of Steves method as well as my own. I firstly created a layer, ran the difference clouds filter and hit CTRL + F a few times to strengthen the effect ( 1 ). I then ran the stylize - find edges filter. I then opened up levels ( 2 ) and pulled them closer together to the right to bring out the cracks effect. lastly I selected the white using the magic wand and deleted the white areas ( 3 ) and took a selection of what was left and pulled it into my image. I then used Steves previous suggetion using a brush in quick mask set to disolve. Using a little gaussian blur, I made a new selection and using pillow emboss ended up with something to what I was looking for. ![]() |
