Black and white
ok, so I am doing a project for the local police department and their cars. right now, their cars are black front and back, with white doors. they want a prototype of an all black and all white car with the logo (which i have already created) imposed on there. the problem is i can change the color of the car to any other color sucessfully but black or white! how do i do this???

The image i am working on is located here:

Re: it really DOES matter if you
This isn't as hard as it appears at first, although it is true that black and white are, perversely, the hardest shades to simulate.

Before I show how it's done, does anyone else here feel like having a crack at this one?

Oh, by the way, there's an odd bug in the forum software that makes it ignore any heading text after an inverted comma. I assumed your original title "It really DOES matter if you" should have been followed by " 're" and then a few more words, but couldn't figure out what those words might have been! So I changed it to the simpler Black and White, for ease of reference.

Re: Black and white
I would have thought that applying a Hue & Saturation adjustment layer to the image, desaturating the colour to grey using the Stauration slider and increase the Brightness slider for White or Decrease the Brightness slider for Black. You will need also to copy the orginal image above the white Hue & Sat layer, link it to the Hue & Sat layer, desaturate it, and set the Blend Mode to Hard Light and repeat for the Black Hue & Sat layer, this will bring out the reflections so as to not lose any detail.

Here's a very quick and dirty example.

Re: Black and white
I'm a rough time with this. I can't figure an easy way to change the the white doors to match the black ones. All of my attempts look terrible.

I've tried Curves, Hue and Saturation, Replace Color, Select Color and several blending layers, but nothing matches the subtle coloring and shading of the black doors.

Outside of creating several complex masks and blowing color, I don't know of a quick and easy method.

I thought of changing the color of the black doors first, then matching the white ones to the new color. But to me, the real art is matching the original colors.

Re: Black and white
OK, here's my take on the problem. It's essentially the same as Maiden's solution, except I approach it slightly differently. Bobby Jo, that's a good try - all you need is a little dodge and burn to fix it!

1. Select the area you want to change - the white, in this case - and use Curves to lower both the brightest point and the midpoint to a level like that shown here. (If your image gets brighter when you do this, click those double arrows in the middle of the graduated bar to switch the Curves direction.)

This gives us the darkness we need: the trouble is that it's too dull-looking, as if it only has an undercoat of black primer.

2. Duplicate the layer, and set the new layer's mode to Hard Light. Now increase the brightness/contrast using Curves (or, indeed, Brightness & Contrast if you prefer) to bring back the shine that was missing.

3. Use Color Balance, Hue/Saturation or whatever to add a little blue to the side, to make it match the rest of the car.

4. Finally - cheat. I've darkened up the original car a little here, both beneath the doors and on the front wing, to make it match the new doors.

Thanks for posting this one, rawknee, and do let us see your finished version!

Steve

Re: Black and white
Okay, I had an attempt. I ended up with the same annoying blue splotches that can be seen on BobbyJo's image (no offence ) on the door of my car, so my solution was just do desaturate the hard light layer, duplicate it and darken it a little more with curves again. Whad'ya think?

Re: Black and white
Very good. The new doors need some green in them, though, if they're to match the rest of the car.

Re: Black and white
Here's my two cents, I didn't copy the white doors, and didn't recolor them with curves or Hue and Saturation.

I did it the old fashion way. I made masks of the doors. Then I used a large soft brush, set to a low opacity, and brushed in colors taken from the black doors. I used small brushes for details, and I finished up with the Smudge tool and Noise filter.

It only took me 3 minutes. (I'm lying!)

Re: Black and white
Thats really fantastic, Neal.

Its a sobering lesson to those of us who got so befuddled with blending modes and umpteen adjustment layers - you have managed a result equal to Steves, simply by using a paint brush !! (and an obvious artistic talent)
