Lots of fun with this one! I had some trouble with the eyes, though.

Thank you, Vicho. This one involved alot of layers & frustrating patience! 
The shirt in the original photo looked silky to me, so I wanted to reproduce that concept the best way I could. The base color of the shirt was done using hue/saturation...but the real trick was this, I selected the layer, and went to the channels filter. CTRL + Click the thumbnail of the GREEN channel and pressed CTRL + C. Went back to the layers pallet, made a new layer above the image, and CTRL + V. That puts all the green information on its own layer (it will not be visible on your image, though). Then, gaussian blurred that layer to around 15. Reduced its opacity to 85%. Duplicated the layer & blurred again to about 25. Then selected the first layer, (value 15 layer), and used Hue/Saturation to slightly bring about the silky haze of the blue. Hope that makes sense?

Not at all, Dave! That's why I put it here!  I learn through constructive criticism, and this site is the perfect place for just that! I really like the new jawlines, I'll make changes similar. Also, did you apply a surface blur on the face? I like the smoothness of the skin you created. I see you lightened up around the eyes and it works really well. I wasn't sure how far I should have gone with mine, so I restrained a little when lightening them. Also, the lightened shading on the face gives a cleaner, more youthful look.
The biggest thing that keeps bugging me everytime I look at the color image is that the hair color bleeds slightly into the background. I must admit, by the time I got to the hair...I became a little lazy.

Yes, I applied a softening technique to the skin that I found in a different book, and have been using for quite awhile now with my clients. It is similar to putting on a layer of make up, and has been quite successful. I'm at work, so limited time right now, but I can post a tut on skin softening this weekend if you like. I don't think the color bleed is a problem. It just makes it look like there is some hair that is beyond the resolution of the photo. It really looks better than if you had cropped it too close. |
