I think I'm better off with photographs... - Digital Painting
So, I'm planning to take a family photograph of my niece & nephew to turn into a digital painting as a Christmas gift. I scheduled this coming Sunday to take the picture, which should then leave me with plenty of time for the conversion before Santa breaks the fireplace again. Their father already knows what I plan to do with the image. (Which means I'll have to come up with something...oops) BUT, I've never digitally painted before in a traditional way. So, I thought I should start practicing. This is my first attempt at digital painting without the use of references. Hopefully, having the family image as a reference will be easier? Hard, hard, hard technique to learn! ![]() But here's my attempt. CC appreciated. ![]() |

Chris, I find the dodge and burn tools are essential when it comes to painting with photoshop. It take a little getting used to, but works great when you get the hang of it. Use low exposures (8 to 12%) and experiment with the different ranges and brush sizes. Neil _________________ "I haven't failed.... I've found 10,000 ways that don't work!" Thomas Edison |

Thanks, Niel. I gave it a shot and it really works well! Claude, those links were very inspirational. I haven't considered the vector version. I'll have to look into that after I take the image on Sunday. Progenic, thanks for the comment. I use a Wacom Intuous3 4x6. Here's a link to some useful tutorials on digital painting I found when I attempted the image. The wolf in the "Walkthroughs" section is worth a look, but the hair in the "tutorials" was most useful: http://div.dyndns.org/EK/tutorial/ I really didn't understand layering the colours until I watched the .GIF image about halfway down the page here: http://div.dyndns.org/EK/tutorial/updo/ I'm such a visual junkie. Watching something illustrated in motion rather than reading pages of text somehow makes all the difference in shortening the learning curve. Thanks everyone, --Chris |

Tank im thinking of getting the wacom intuos 3 A4, which i think are pretty good with a large working area, which will be handy for my big clumsy hands. Im certainly with you on the visual learning side, i learn 10 times faster when i actually watch somebody do it via video ect, than i do when im just reading the words in a book. |

Jeesh! How big are your hands? ![]() I would like to have a slightly larger tablet, but I carry it around with the laptop quite often. So I'm better off with the smaller version. I would suggest considering the wireless version as opposed to the USB chord. (It's long and gets in the way especially if you plan to work mobile from a laptop.) Whatever your choice, you can't go wrong with a tablet! How did I ever get around Photoshop with a mouse? |

Interesting idea. Below is my first crude unfinished attempt. I lost interest. I might start again with a photo I like more. Anyone guess who it is? ![]() |
