My new lens
I got my Sigma wide angle lens a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to try it out.
This is a lake that is about 200 yards from my house.
It was like a sheet of glass that night. I couldn't resist the beautiful sight.

Re: My new lens
That's beautiful, I can see a lot more lake photos coming on. Any with ice for this weeks challenge?

Thanks Vibeke,
No ice yet, but it won't be long. About another month or so.

That's a great photo and you live a very lovely place. Best I could hope for within 200 yards is a dual carriageway.

Re: My new lens
Thanks everybody,
Maybe the photo is misleading. It is about the only thing in town worth looking at.
I'm just lucky to be as close as I am to it for the fishing and the unpredictable beautiful scenery it offers.
I have taken many pictures of this lake and it is amazing how different it can look from the same point of view.

Nick,
It is a Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 for a Canon Rebel XSi

Re: My new lens
Thanks Steve, I've read great reports about that lens.

Please please forgive me, but this is a personal thing of mine. Horizons should always be level. If you drag the ruler tool along the horizon and move the end points so the line is flush with lake level / sea level and go to image / rotate canvas / arbitary, PS will tell you how far the line is from level in plus or minus degrees. Hit ok and the canvas will rotate. Crop the image accordingly. Hope I'm not teaching granny to suck eggs!

Re: My new lens
I have to agree with you, Nick. I think I use the straighten tool with my photos as much as Mr C. uses Plastic Wrap. I am useless at getting a level photo.

Re: My new lens
Good call Nick.
Now that you have mentioned that, it is something I will never forget.
Thanks!

(although, it could have been the day they were draining the lake...)

Phew!

I genuinely aim to steer away from critical comment, but this is such a great image, it just deserved the best treatment.

Thanks Dave & Steve.

Re: My new lens
Have to agree about the horizon, hate crocked ones. I use the straightening tool on nearly all my photographs with a horizon. Just don't seem to be able to hold the camera straight. I use it so much that I have created a shortcut for applying it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I must have one leg shorter than the other, I think!

Great image, Steve!

Thanks all,
That's why I like posting here. I look up to you because you are much better and more experienced than I am. I'm always learning something.

BTW, where is the straightening tool?

Steve, you flatter us, but it's just not true.

In CS3 it's called the Ruler and I seem to recall in CS it was the Measure. I hope the screen grab helps.

Re: My new lens
Just to add to Nick's description: once you've marked the horizon, you'll need to go to Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary to actually perform the straightening process.
