Box of Tutorials
This is something I started to create when I was trying to come up with a new tutorial and I came up with this. This is all 100% photoshop. All of my previous tutorials are used in creating this picture except for one. I hope you can point them out. You will also get to see a sneak peek at some new tutorials I have in mind. I do have one spelling mistake. I should start proof reading of what I type. I will probably add more to this picture. Who knows. Let me know what you think.

Luis, I wish I was as talented as you ... *sigh* ...

You must spend hours working out how to do these things then creating the tutorials. I hope to make time in the new year to follow more of them, as I really enjoyed doing your jigsaw puzzle one.

Fantastic Luis it would be very hard to guess that any of the elements in this picture aren't 100% real it looks like a collection of photo objects yet each one is 'shopped - very nice work. I will have to download your complete collection of tutorials.

And please, please, please have a word with Steve and publish a book.

Kate, I spend a lot of time looking at objects or textures that are in front of me and I would try to re-create that in photoshop. If I can remember what I did, I will then create a tutorial. I'm glad you liked my puzzle tutorial

My next tutorials will be on creating the notebook paper and the cardboard box texture.

Re: Box of Tutorials
You do some fantastic work Luis and it's all totally convincing.

My question is: Why create these from scratch when you can use a photograph of the real thing.

I can understand that it might be a challenge and I'm sure when you have nailed a new technique you feel satisfied that you've complete another good job.

I know that when you create these things yourself you have a little more control over lighting than you might if it was a stock photo. But when is a photo of a cork board or a vinyl LP just not good enough?

Your cork board was amazing and looked just like the real thing, but so would a photo

Re: Box of Tutorials
Hi Paul.

I guess the only thing that I can think of why create these from scratch is the challenge and can I make something that looks real. I got started in doing this when I read Steve's HTCIP second edition on creating a book and a candle. This is probably why I have more tutorials on creating objects or textures than I have photo effects on my site.

I just create things from scratch for my own personal work and to show other people my work. I have no problems on using photos in a project if I need something quick or if I'm just too lazy in creating something.

I suppose it's not just lighting but the fact that if you create it from scratch you can customise it to fit your needs - say for example the cardboard box and the tape - you could Google or source out a stock image but if you want a specific look, specific tears in the box, precise placing of the tape etc. then Luis method is perfect - plus (and this is the big winner over a stock photograph) it's free, it's 100% your own work, there are no royalty issues, you can watermark-copy protect it as 100% your own work - that's going to save you an absolute fortune in cash just for a little bit of work.

Re: Box of Tutorials
Hi Luis
Bit late coming to this one, so I apologise for being tardy!
I agree with Maiden - your creation gives you total control and therefore a stronger end result.
The textures are faultless. The only thing that strikes me (and I can't create anything NEAR this quality so feel free to dismiss it) is the lighting. It's not quite right so the whole thing doesn't look quite real. I wouls suggest setting like this this up in the garden and study how the light hits it. If it's a neutral (grey) day, the light or tones on the cardboard box would be slightly lighter at the top and darker at the bottom. The same applies to the note paper. I think the lighting's great on the objects in the box, and the cardboard needs to follow this direction of light. As it is now, you're not really sure where the light on the outside of the box is coming from. I think the same applies to the rope. Also, you're not sure why the background is so dark.

This is just an opinion, however. I think the actual piece, as with all your work, is stunning!

Hi Chris.

Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you liked my picture. Interesting point about the lighting. I guess the reason why I made the background dark is to point out the main focus of the picture which is the box and the objects. I can see your point about the rope. Something is not right about the lighting. Thanks for the tips. Looks like I have to work hard in lighting a scene from scratch.

Hi Luis
It is your observational skills that are your strength. Study light the way you already study texture and you'll crack it. As Steve says in The Book, it's light and shade that helps you achieve realism. With your skills, I've no doubt you'll find it easier than you think. Will look forward to seeing the result.

Great work.
Chris
