Playing with 3d
I though that it was about time that I really learned how Cinema 4D worked so I had a bash at making this Bristol Beaufighter from scratch. It was one of the most powerful aircraft the RAF had at the beginning of the war. This particular version was a Coastal Strike aircraft with 404 Squadron RCAF shortly after D-Day. It was armed with 4 x 20mm cannon in the nose and 8 x 25lb rockets under the wing. You did not want to be on the receiving end!

It is not quite complete as I haven't figured out how to make the cockpit framing yet.

Photoshop was used to make the textures which were painted onto the aircraft in BodyPaint.

Thank you Kate and Deborah. Total time on this was about 50 -60 hours but a lot of that was spent learning new techniques and also how Body paint worked..........and then fixing all the mistakes I made.

I'll be having a go at (probably) a Messerschmidt Bf110 nightfighter next and that should take a lot less time. But don't expect any results too soon.

nice work GKB. I used to do modelling with Milkshape 3d (game models are handy to knock out with this program). Texture with Photoshop and set into a background for viewing purposes or capture in-game shots.

Cinema 4d isn't something I'm overly familiar with, so is this a 3d model using box modelling or splines?

Thank you. It was mainly box modelling with HyperNURBS. The only splines I used were in the forward part of the engine cowling and the engine casing. These were lathed to produce the round shape. The rest of the actual engine (as opposed to the cowlings) was built with primitives.

That's really nice GKB. I'm just getting into Maya (again), so I can appreciate the time it takes to create something like that.

Did you load in front and side views as guides for the modelling?

Thanks Paul. Yes, Front, Side, Top and half a dozen sections through the fuselage at various points.

Beautiful. A really fantastic job, Gordon. I wish I knew how to do this stuff, or had the inclination to learn it. 3D has always infuriated me.

Not starting a full blown discussion, but, once you overcome the technical aspect (accepting that some parts are quite technical) it's rather quite fun and enjoyable.

It's like that model we all had in art class. So many shapes make up any object. And 3d is no different.

Is there any chance of posting a wireframe version of it from the same view point. I'd love to see inside.
