Focke Wulf 190
Playing with Cinema 4d again.

If there was one single seat WWII fighter that I would love to have flown it’s the Focke Wulf 190.

This particular aircraft represents the FW190 A3 which landed at RAF Pembrey in Wales on 23 June 1942 when its pilot Oberleutnant Armin Faber, the Gruppenadjutant of III/JG2, got dis-orientated during a mission over this country. He reported that he had mistaken the Bristol Channel for the English Channel and handed British Intelligence one of its greatest prizes of the war. The A3 version had only been in service for 3 months and was giving the Spitfire Mk Vs a very hard time as it was superior in every way except turning circle.

Photoshop was used for creating the textures and post production. The textures were applied using BodyPaint.

I think your aerial backdrops are fab: where do you get them from ?

I don't quite understand what "Body paint" is or the difference between normal Photoshop texturing, and to what extent the original aircraft is created by you.

Anyway, great stuff, though I'd like to see more of a metalic sheen.

Re: Focke Wulf 190
Cinema 4d is more a 3d/texturing program with UV maps than normal PS texturing. Although personally I prefer Lightwave/3ds and Milkshape for building and Cinema 4d for abstract rendering.

Basically you have the complete texture laid flat with co-ordinates on how it's to wrap around the created object. It can get overwhelming, texturing can be complicated especially in 3ds. I included a link Michael that I hope explains it better with a picture than I with words.

http://lauramartinot.com/content/bin/images/large/27_texturas.jpg

And maybe check out http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/tut_texturemapping.htm It explains how to build and texture aeroplanes. It basically comes down to box modelling i.e. everything is created from one box using panels off the original box http://www.3dsmaxtutorials.net/modelling-tutorials/box-modelling-a-cat

Nice work GKB!!

Good Morning Michael,

Thanks for your comments about my skies. I photographed them myself. When I wasn’t slaving over a hot radar screen I was usually to be found, cameras in hand, flying alongside other aircraft. After 30+ years of doing this I now have a collection of different skies from different angles. Unfortunately most of them have an aircraft in the way so, in my Photoshop work, I have to use images where the other aircraft can either be covered up by the montage or the aircraft can be cloned out.

To expand on what Republic of Game said; Body Paint is a 3D painting programme which is either integrated with cinema 4D or available as a stand alone programme for use with other 3D programmes. It is used alongside Photoshop not as a replacement.

If you try to paint directly on to a render of a 3D model it can be very difficult to get perspectives and curves to look correct so Body Paint allows you to flatten out your model into what is known as UV co-ordinates. The easiest way to understand this is to think of the Earth being flattened out to the type of map we normally see of it, a Mercator Projection. Although the UV co-ordinates are distorted it is now much easier to paint the texture onto the surface which is done in Photoshop. I have attached an unwrapped head to show you what this looks like.

The Focke Wulf 190 was built entirely by myself based on 3 view drawings. The fuselage started out as a simple cube which was stretched and distorted until it looked like a Focke Wulf 190. The wing was done the same way except that I only built half of it and the other half is a mirror image.

Thanks for the kind comments Kate and Republic of Game.

Brilliant work Gordon!

I looked into purchasing a 3d program but recoiled when I saw the price...I thought it was a phone number

I know what you mean Anna but there 3D programmes available for free. One is Blender and there is also Wings 3D. You can find them on the web.

I'd try Milkshape, it's relatively inexpensive about £30 or so. And is used for PC game mods quite a bit. there is a stripped down 3ds max that's free. Again more for hobbyist game builders but you can export and texture in other programs!

Re: Focke Wulf 190
Blender is a good program has it contains all the features of a full priced 3D application however it's learning curve is a little steep - but once mastered people have said they perfer the Blender interface.

Even though the learning curve is steep, Anna - there are lots of Blender tutorial websites plus Blender works more seamlessly with video as it has it's own Video player/preview within the program.

Here's a link to BlendeArtists.org some of these guys really show the power of the program.

And just look at this fantastic photorealistic furniture:
