Facelift
I built a green screen to make it easier to extract objects, so I decided to take a few pictures to see how it worked and I ended up with this. I realize this technique is nothing new and has been done many times, but I had to try it for myself. Any crits are welcomed. ![]() |

Re: Facelift
Very strong. I like the beard edge, and the edge of the face generally. Perhaps there should be something inside the head? |

Superbly done very nice, although I agree with Steve about putting something inside of the space. Becky |

Re: Facelift
Beautifully done Steve. Those little bits of beard overhanging the edges really make it. Gordon _________________ If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you ever tried. |

Re: Facelift
Thanks everybody. Sorry for the lack of imagination inside the head. Actually, what little is in there is way in the back... |

Re: Facelift
Steve I teach on a creative advertising course. Part of the way in which we judge work is to ask the question, can I argue with it ie can i Find something that doesn't work, that makes it a weak concept. I can't argue with this image. It is extremely realsitic. Now then, one more questin: what the hell is a green screen!? Chris |

Re: Facelift
A Green Screen is what it says, which is a chroma green screen behind the subject and evenly lit so that it can be keyed out of the picture often used in Special Effects for movies like the new batch of Star Wars movies. The more traditional alternative was the Blue Screen, which was a Chroma Blue Screen behind the subject which is far kinder to skin tones when it comes to pre-keying footage or photographs. The Green Screen is more popular now because it allows for better compositing if the clothing the actor wears contains a high amount of blues making Blue Screen problematic. Although traditionally it is Blue and Green Screens any colour can be used as a Chroma Backdrop as long as the actors and props don't wear something of a similar colour that will be keyed out with the background colour. Hope that helps. BTW I have both Green Screen and a Blue Screen cloth in my studio-to-be ![]() |

Re: Facelift
So it's not something you use in PS, but rather a backdrop for shots for easier cut outs? |

Re: Facelift
Hi Chris, Green (Blue or any other colour) screen is mainly used in film work when compositing another background with a filmed foreground. When at the compositing stage anything that is green is basically masked out and the other image is superimposed on the new background. Films such as 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" are filmed almost entirely in green screen with just the actors and nothing else. The green is cut out out a post production and the background dropped in in its place. You also see it a lot on tv when a politician is being interviewed with the Houses of Parliament behind. The weather girls on the telly use a similar set up and have to crib the weather chart from a monitor in front of them so that they can see where they should be pointing. If the lighting isn't done correctly then you can occasionally see some green fringing, particularly around the hair which, in my case, wouldn't be a problem! It can, of course, be used for Photoshop work but make sure you get your lighting right or it can give you those fringing problems This is a small green screen studio set up. Re: Facelift
Thanks Chris, I appreciate your feed back. I got lucky with this one. I never really intended on using this photo for a final picture. It's one of those things where, once I got playing around in PS I had to keep going. I wish I had your consistent creativity. Mine only shows up once in a while. Thanks again. |

Re: Facelift
You teach a creative advertising course and you don''t know what greenscreen is? SHAME ON YOU, I would have been embarrassed to tell anyone that..... Teasing... Actually green screen and blue screen has been around for a very long time and the use of blacks and whites and grey solid backgrounds have been around since the very early days of motion picture photography and became very popular with the advent of modern video production. Actually the original concept for shooting on a plain background especially white backgrounds that have became so popular and usually (and incorrectly) referred to as "high key" photography was used FOR advertising. It was a way to easily separate a product or subject for print ads or to mask in a different background...... BTW any consistent solid color can be used for this process as long as the subject doesn't have the same or near same color in the image. GreenScreen and BlueScreen have become so popular for a few reasons #1 they are colors not usually found in clothing and much different than normal skin tone. #2 They are very video and movie production friendly. Seamless paper backgrounds are so popular because the background needs to be very evenly lit so cloth is a PITA due to shadows..... Jim Crabtree (my first post !!!)
