Boeing 2707-300

In June 1963 president John F. Kennedy formed the National Supersonic Transport programme. The purpose of this programme was to select a design of supersonic passenger aircraft that would be larger and faster than Concorde which, by that time, was well advanced in planning.

In July 1964 designs were submitted by North American Aviation, Lockheed and Boeing. The Boeing design won the competition.

The design revolved around an aircraft that had swing-wings, was made of stainless steel and could cruise at Mach 2.7 - Mach 3 as against Concorde's aluminium construction and Mach 2.2 capability. The aircraft became unofficially known as the Boeing 2707.

It was quickly realised that the proposed design was technologically far too advanced for its time and the aircraft was redesigned as a 'double delta' wing with a conventional tailplane. Even this was well beyond the technology available at the time and, with soaring costs, the US Congress pulled the financial plug in March 1971 after a mock-up had been completed and with two prototypes under construction.

This image was built in Cinema 4D from general arrangement 3 view drawings. Pan Am was the lead customer with 15 aircraft 'ordered'.

It's beautiful Gordon. I went on Concorde once. Travelling on it wasn't as amazing as looking at it from the outside.

How is your four-legged friend?

Thank you Sophie.

Charley is sitting up and taking nourishment! He had an op on his spine for a slipped disc which was pressing on his spinal chord and causing him to lose control of his legs. He is rather enjoying being hand-fed chicken pieces. He has been quite perky but, today, is looking and feeling rather sorry for himself. He is a bit of a mummy’s boy and should be much happier when his mum comes back from her skiing trip tomorrow. Charley does ‘pathos’ very well.

Excellent work Gordon, and very satisfying image. I can imagine that took a lot of work, but the results look perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Stainless steel a strange or innovative choice of material. I was going to say its prone to fatigue, but aluminium is much worse, and with the choices of alloy compounds the properties can be well tuned to requirements these days after a lot of research in many fields. Great for high temperatures. Its relatively heavy though and difficult to work-with especially for novel SS flight application IMHO.

What a pity they did not at least make a prototype. If that had flown, maybe there would have been less resistance to Concorde in US.

Sophie, lucky you. I only experienced it 2-3 times taking off from LHR when we were queued at the end of the runway behind it as it tookoff. Very impressive sound and sight with the afterburner for take-off.

That's a nicely done aircraft.

Do you use flight sims Gordon? There's quite a large community of people who create aircraft for sims.

I was just thinking it would be a natural progression to actually fly your creations.

I am just getting into X-Plane and some of your aircraft look better than most of the user created planes available.

Thank you for the kind comments. I don't use flight sims ,I'm afraid, as I prefer the real thing.

If you would like to use any of the aircraft I have created let me know and I'll try to sort something out for you. The first question would be 'in
which format would you like the model.

I should say, though, that I am going to be very busy for the next 2 or 3 months with not a lot of time for modelling, although I hope to get the odd Friday Challenge done.

Charley is 11 years old. He is doing well but gets tired if he walks too far.

I don't know Gordon, there are literally thousands of flyable aircraft, or AI (artificial intelligence) for Microsoft Flight Simulator. there are now some fantastic enhancement packs for it such as infinite variable ultra realistic weather, ultra-fine terrain or Airports such as Heathrow, and Charles de Gaulle.

The quality of the aircraft means you can have multiple angles and views: why go to the trouble of making a plane when they're oven-ready?

That's a great offer Gordon. Unfortunately I've never tried modelling an aircraft for use in flight sims.

The Sim I use comes with an aircraft maker but I'll leave that to people with skill
