Photomerge in CS5 - Impressed!!
I just had to share this with you. I've been reading various digital photo mags since 2004 and having looked at readers photomerge work, thought I really should try that sometime. Well, we visited York yesterday and while clicking away outside the Minster, the thought of doing a panorama crossed my mind. I set the camera to manual exposure, left it on auto focus and took a few quick snaps. Back home today, I nearly deleted the files because it looked far too 'wrong' to even begin to try. I took the plunge and this is what photoshop produced. No cloning, or patching has been done, but having cropped the file, I did make a slight distortion to straighten the verticals on the right hand towers. I would urge everyone to have a go at this, if they haven't done so already. This has to be a very complicated set of images by any standard and I think the way Photoshop has stitched them together is absolutely amazing. After positing this I realised that I've shown you the first series of images and not the second, but there is not much difference and the point is the same. It just shows that PS is much smarter than me! Nick

Nick - amazing. I wouldn't have believed you could get that result with so many different angles in the original shots. Trevor - rather than cloning, did you try Content Aware Fill? It's perfect for patching edges in these cases. |

Thanks Steve and Anna The images were taken using a full frame SLR with 24-70mm lens, at very close range, so the converging verticals are acute. As said, no patching by me and PS did the entire job. I was amazed at what it produced. Nick |

Steve, - Yes I tried it first, but it gave me some artifacts. My PC was going so slowly, so I just used what I knew best to remove the very small transparent holes quickly. The original blending result was perfect for 5 images, though it got confused on #6 and I cut most of #7 out, because made no sense, but that is another story..... Today I tried again Content Aware with a fresh layer, new selection, and it worked perfectly. (I guess I don't need to repost). Operator, tired, learning error. Thanks, Trevor |

But am I right in thinking you've replaced the sky? Only the clouds behind the rose window portion of the building don't appear to have been taken from any of the constituent shots. Perhaps a touch of Lens Correction now, to straighten up? |

Steve As mentioned, it was not until I'd posted the image did I realise that I've shown the first series taken and not the second, which made up the composite. There will have been around 30 -45 seconds between the two. I made no adjustment to the content of the picture, so all down to Photoshop. This was a quick first attempt and I may revisit the process and take more time. Nick |

The CS5 photomerge is so superior to the old one, I merged a photo the other day that I had done a couple of years go, this one is so much better, If I can find the old one I will upload them. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

I did once this shot from at the shore in a little town of the Mediterranean coast of Spain. It was late at night, so some of the pics were out of focus, but Photoshop did an incredible work patching all the pieces almost without help of mine.
