Starry Starry Star Trek Night
Another attempt at incorporating people etc into old/famous paintings. This time using a Van Gogh painting, Heres the full quality version if you want to see the detail on the enterprise http://www.flickr.com/photos/22884105@N03/5696637334/sizes/l/in/photostream/ ![]() |

This is very nice Simon ... The perspective matches very well and the brush effects on the Enterprise are very Van-Goghis! Did you paint it with oil or is it a digitally painted image? |

Re: Starry Starry Star Trek Night
Hi Daniel, many thanks for your kind words. It was all done in photoshop, I was going to try and use the same technique with last weeks challenge of Ted, but never got round to it, with my new puppy. If you're wondering how I did it i found a tutorial on worth1000 but basically I pasted an image of the Enterprise into the Van Gogh painting then basically applied the smudge stick filter to it, then on a new layer above applied some layer styles, then using a small brush and constantly sampling made small strokes to fill up the area of the ship. Then added highlights and shadows at a very low opacity 10-12%, sampling colours again from the main painting, (yellows and purples) added and finally outline in black. merged all the layers, except the background painting together, adjusted the hue and saturation and then decreased the opacity to 98% and thats it basically. |

Very impressive, Simon. The only thing I'd look at again is the colour of the Enterprise. Look at the buildings: the church is probably grey as well, but it appears blue because it's night time. There's actually no grey whatsoever in the rest of the painting. Recolour the Enterprise to match the blue of the church spire, and I think it will blend in much better. |

Interesting work Simon and well done. Trying to emulate other artists techniques can be difficult. I think on the ship you have done a great job with his short stroke, hard flat brush painting technique. Also with the black outlines. I painted one of his paintings (not in PS), Cypress Trees, and found it difficult not to slip back to one of my more usual techniques. Just another observation, Van Gogh seems to use one single brush size in his paintings. Not a problem, just another small thought. Trevor |
