Haven't been around much and here's why...
I have been busy finishing my final project for college. As I mentioned elsewhere I am moving to Graphic Design from Photography and wanted to produce work which should at least a basic knowledge of composition, colour, style and typography. I researched horror/thriller film posters through the years paying attention to the above points for each decade or so and the changes in each. I then produced a set of posters reflecting these changes. I took the title from the John Carpenter directed episode of Master of Horror, called Cigarette Burns, in which the hero is task to find the legendary film "La Fin Absolue Du Monde" (The Absolute End of the World). I also took as recurring motifs the world and of the angel, which feature heavily in both the film and the TV episode. Let me know what you think? This is the 1910 - 1919 poster and the first time I tried painting in Photoshop: ![]() |

This is the 1920 - 1929. I took the shot of Jo, a fellow student and the ditched the colour and "hand tinted" using PS: ![]() |

1940 - 1949. This is sort of a film-noir type thriller feel. I am still not happy with the font but couldn't find anything better in the time: ![]() |

This is my 1950 - 1959 Saul Bass poster. I love the work of Bass so set myself the task to imagine what he would have come up with: ![]() |

1960 - 1969. Inspired by one of my favourite horror film posters, Rosemary's Baby. The end product became very different to how I had first planned it: ![]() |

1970 - 1979. This started life as a "slasher" style idea but when I sourced the printout style font, it became more of a conspiracy thriller along the lines of the Parallax View or Three Days of the Condor: ![]() |

1980 - 1989. I wanted to produce an illustrated/painted poster for this period as this was the heyday of the epic painted posters of artists such Bob Peak, Drew Struzan and Richard Amsel: ![]() |

1990 - 1999. My grungy SE7EN inspired poster. During the photoshoot for the posters I had the idea to get my mate Tommy to turn around and I just took the back of his head. When I added this to the picture and duplicated it to create the shadow, it really all came together: ![]() |

2000s+. Of recent I have noticed a militaristic look to a lot of films such as District 9, Battle: Los Angeles etc. and this was my take on them. Tommy just looks the part of the dictator bringing the world to the brink of disaster ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well, I hope you all like them. I am very happy to say they were chosen to be hung in the college gallery as part of our end of year exhibition: ![]() |

Very clever work. The styles for each decade are very reminiscent of the time. We might need to have a chat about typography at some point! By the way, have you checked out my Art & Design in Photoshop? Seems like your kind of book... |

Re: Haven't been around much and here's why...
Thanks to you both for the kind words. Steve, any help with Typography would be gratefully received. I have the book "A Type Primer" by John Kane from the college library to read over the summer hols. It is amazing how large a topic it is, so any help will be great. Talking of books I do have both "Art and Design..." and "How to Cheat..." and will be working through both over the summer, now college is finished. If the amount I learned at your guest lecture is anything to go by, my Photoshop skills will improve hugely. |

Thanks Jota. I am very happy to say I got 74% which is a Distinction. Shame the marks don't carry over to next year but it is really nice to end the year on such a high! |
