drawn in Photoshop
Hello
I drew and colored this cutout toy soldier in Photoshop CS4 using the pencil tool and paintbucket. I blended the face colors in Painter 11.

Best wishes.

Wow that is really good you are quite a master of the pen tool, a tool that many shy away from using. I like the detail on the jacket too.

Well done!

Re: drawn in Photoshop
Very nicely done. I like the way you've retained the graphic nature of this.

A couple of points:

1. The highlight on the busby is on the left, but the highlight on the trousers is on the right.

2. Shouldn't there be some shading on the tunic as well?

3. That's a really firm grip on the flute! He should be holding it up with his thumbs, so that just his finger tips can press the keys as required.

Welcome to the forum, Peter. I used to work with a Peter de Wit back in 1989, when I edited The Truth - that wouldn't be you, would it?

Hello Scott.
I drew it freehand with the pencil tool, mainly at 3px wide line.
I did move it into Illustator to use the pen tool to draw a boundary line around the design, so that it can be laser cut.

Best wishes.
Peter.

Well spotted about the direction of the light Steve.
Perhaps I will change that. The truth is I drew it intuitively, just thinking how I liked the design. But Maybe I should make the light direction consistent.
I take your point about the flute grip being too firm. - As a saxophone player I should know better.
The thing is that I cant really draw properly, so I find it quite hard to get things right.

I have not heard of the Truth, so It is probably not the same Peter de Wit.

Cheers
(I have just bought your book 100% Photoshop. I will try to work through it - itlooks very good, but difficult!.)

Re: drawn in Photoshop
The thing I find about photoshop is that things may seem difficult at first, but when you tackle them things seem to open up.

When you are learning, you are maybe pressing things and opening up windows that you have never seen before but the more you do it the more familiar you become with the options available to you. So much so that you will begin to incorporate the effects in to your own work without even thinking.

If you are new to photoshop my advice would be to understand how the layers work including masks. This is the route I took - I then learnt what every tool did in the tools menu. From that point I was ready to use photoshop to help enhance my photography. Steves books are excellent and I thoroughly recommend them to anybody wishing to learn photoshop. I worked my way through How to cheat CS3 following along on every page including the tests at the back. I too have just received the 100% photoshop book its daunting stuff but just tackle one bit at a time!

Good luck!
