The Game
I wanted to depict a tournament in an arena. The chess pieces are kitchen scale weights. The board was drawn in CS, by filling alternate square with black and white and then coloured slightly using a solid fill Adj layer at low opacity. The board was then distorted. The columns are candle holders. This is my first post, so please be gentle! Nick ![]() |

Re: The Game
Welcome Nick, looks really good to me. The only thing I would say is that the pawns are not in perspective; with the three pink ones at the back, the foreground one is smaller than the two at the rear which makes them look like they are floating. And the other thing is, that the pink of the chess pieces seems to jar with the orange of the sky, maybe they should be more orange? Please don't be put off by my comments. It is great! |

Re: The Game
Thanks for your comments Deborah and I'm glad you like the image. Regarding the three pawns at the rear and all the other pieces, I tried to use the ratio of the squares to define the relative sizes. The foremost of the rear pawns is in fact larger than the two behind. I brought the image into CS again, zoomed in and measured each with a ruler. If anything, I should have made the furthest pawn slightly smaller. Regarding colour, I tried different hues and the pink tone seemed to work better with the natural brass colour. I picked up the colour of the sky and tried to shade the pieces to give the impression that the sky was influencing their colour. Nick |
