First Timer - (to this site)
Hi folks - great book Steve; I'd be interested in any feedback on this comp. The client asked for a - studio shot with dramatic lighting - cut out and retouch - landfill background with added elements - dismal but dramatic foreground elements (smoke/fog/noise) - final comp should fit with the overall marketing theme of client and target market (16-24) Time budget: 4 hrs. Currently: 1.5hrs. Thanks much in advance - looking forward to your feedback! Greetings from Florida- bk Original: ![]() Comp: ![]() |

I think this is a great piece of work and the band fits nicely into the scene. There seems to be a slight halo around the figures, particularly the arms of the girl and the man on the left. Perhaps this is intentional? With a bit of tidying up on the mask, I believe you'll have a winner there. Welcome to the forum. Nick |

Re: First Timer - (to this site)
Hi bk, I agree with Nick. Tidy up the mask and it will look pretty good. There is only one other, very small bit of re-touching that I can see at the moment. I found that my eye was drawn to the area just under the girl's right armpit; her right, that is. There is something there (presumably a logo on the guy's shirt) which is a little bright and distracting. Two seconds with the clone tool and it will be gone. Hi BK Looks great except for the fog. Have a look at some old horror movies or 80s pop videos to see how low-lying mist behaves. I find there's usually a big difference between what I thought something looked like and what it actually looks like! Hope this helps. Chris |

Re: First Timer - (to this site)
Thanks everyone - I really appreciate your comments. I'll repost the edit (if you guys don't mind) with your suggestions - Great catch on the Army logo (on the tee) - completely missed that one. The halo may be (at high res) both the background fog as well as the side lighting from the original shot. I'm not sure that I'm seeing what you're seeing - and I want to if it'll improve the product. It could be the additional burning I used to enhance depth? I'll scan the net for some fog movie stills - I'm sure they're out there. Thanks again - it's nice to be here! Bryan |

Re: First Timer - (to this site)
Bryan, Just so that you know what we are referring to look at the girl's elbow and the left hand edge of the group, particularly around the tee shirt. There is evidence of a halo most of the way around the cut out and it seems to be pretty much the same width. It looks almost as though you might have done the cut out with the magnetic lasso and had a little bit of feather on it but even that doesn't seem to entirely explain it. Re: First Timer - (to this site)
Here's the updated version. -Removed Army logo -Altered/cleaned up the blurred layer that was behind the foreground image (it was off by a couple of px) -Comped in new cloud/fog layers Getting closer or am I (in your opinions) done and ready to move on? Thanks again for your comments, Bryan ![]() |

Nearly there. Mist on our right (band's left) looks good. The mist on our left is too flat. I would use a combination of layer mask to erase parts of the mist to give it a more varied appearance, and dodge/burn to highlight/shadow it a bit. Chris |

Re: First Timer - (to this site)
Well done, mate. You've done it! One tiny observation: The mist on the floor on our left next to the big guy with folded arms - it's too bright. I don't think there is a light source there that would course that sort of luminesence. The light in this shot seems to be coming from the left, but on the mist it's coming from above. If I was you I would lassoo it, feather the selection then go into selective colour, select neutrals and add black to dull things a bit. I know this is really fine detail, but I always appreciate it when folk point stuff out like this on my work. Other than that it looks great! |

Thanks Chris-
And me too - attention to detail is key (and it's what continues to keep me working). My clients appreciate my obsessive nature though perhaps my wife doesn't at times ![]() OT: Took a walk through your portfolio here: http://cberry.co.uk - enjoyed the visit. Nice work Chris!
