Celtic Knotwork
About 16 years ago I became interested in the construction of Celtic Knotwork, and I spent hours drawing grids and sketching the bands that would eventually create the finished design. Thankfully, back then, we didn't have a PC, and had never heard of PS!

For a while now, I have been on the look out for a tutorial for creating knotwork in PS, but the few I have found were either flawed in one way or another, or used a different method of construction to the way I learnt from books originally.

So there was no other option but to just "give it a go". I have used some techniques from other tutorials, but the majority wasjust using PS knowledge and trial and error.

My first Celtic Knotwork attempt in Photoshop...

I like this - very intricate. Did it take ages to do?

I think this is really great, you obviously have a talent for this type of work. As there is nothing out there to assist others like yourself, maybe you ought to think about putting together something for those who have a similar passion, you certainly appear to have the ability.
If not a piece of software, then maybe a couple of PS tutorials, or articles.
Share your knowledge BB you may even make a couple of bucks!!

I love it, lets see some more.

Re: Celtic Knotwork
Thank you Kate and Mark for your comments. It didn't take as long as it might look, although I want to refine the method a little using layers masks etc, which might make the process a lot more complicated in future! Probably about an hour in total, in between cups of coffee, feeding the cat etc!

I have put up a rough tutorial on the forum which i hope explains the basic method... although I think I have forgotten a lot over 16 years!

I'll post some more when I get some time spare. I'm glad you like it!

I can't understand why it was a problem to you?

It's complicated for anyone new to it, but you said you had been doing it for years.

I'm struggling to see how doing it in photoshop is harder than the way you had been doing it.

I must be missing something.

Re: Celtic Knotwork
Hi Paul - Celtic knotwork is traditionally drawn in a "negative" state - once the horizontal/vertical grid and then the diagonals are drawn, then the next stage would be to draw the holes in between the bands, and then link the lines creating the holes to create the cross pieces. The last thing to be created is the actual bands themselves. It's a very peculiar method of construction, but on paper it works great, as there is a lot less to erase later on. I have always thought of it a bit like those graphic novels where the ink is applied to the background.

Using the same method of construction in Photoshop would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible to achieve, and get a authentic looking result. Perhaps I have been somewhat blinded by the use of traditional methods!

Having had some free time today, I have played around with a more simple design (no internal breaks), concentrating on using layer masks and strokes instead of the eraser tool, and I am a lot happier with the effect. The next stage is to find a way of creating internal breaks that are more rounded... but I think I may already have a solution to this one...

Re: Celtic Knotwork
It sounds very complex either way.

I like the end result.

Do your bands get wider as they pass over other bands or is that an optical illusion? It give it a 3d look.

Re: Celtic Knotwork
Wooow my mind is glowing.

Honestly i lost a trace, and just stare at it.

I just thought that ... :

it can be a good focuser, and mood achiever.
One could by apropriate layout enhance focus, and by right color (knot/and background) achieve mood.

Do you know about any of reasons of making knot's aside of "looking nice" ? im totaly new to it.
