My Xmas project
Had an opportunity to photography this young girl just before xmas and decided to try to duplicate the style of Dave hill, Joel Grimes, Tim Tadder & then add my own spin.

I'm happy with it so I thought I would post & see what the other cheaters think?

Comment corrections anyone.

Re: My Xmas project
A great concept, and the choice of model, wings and background go well together. As far as the image goes, my only real issue is with the hat - it doesn't look like you could really wear a hat in that way. Is it covering just too much of the face? Can it lift up a little?

I like the idea behind the typography, but the ornate font you've chosen for "DARK" is just too intricate to be used at that size. The "Angel" works well, and I can see why you've done it as an outline: but perhaps try an Outer Glow instead?

Also, try this: set your foreground colour to black, then make a new Gradient Map adjustment layer at the top of the layer stack, and set the mode to Soft Light. This might just give the image that extra starkness it needs.

Re: My Xmas project
thanks Steve appreciate the feed back as always.
Last week I ordered the book "Art and Design in Photoshop" I'm hoping that it will give me a better understanding of design & fonts

still a little confused as how to finish off my projects. I notice you have suggested to use a top layer filled with black & set to Soft Light. I've seen this done before, but with photo filters and multiple color layers. IE Blue filter than a light orange changing blend modes to capture the correct ambiance. Do you have a tutorial out on just finishing touches. Things like adding high lights both soft and hard and why and were and tying the image together using layers of different colors then adjusting with blend modes & adjusting the occupancy?

as always thanks
Bob

Re: My Xmas project
I was recommending a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer, not a layer filled with solid black - choose this from the Adjustment Layer dialog. It just helps to make the image that much stronger; if the effect is too strong, simply lower the opacity of the Adjustment Layer.

Normally I'd use Hard Light for this technique, but in the case of your image Soft Light produced a better effect.

I talk about this in How to Cheat in Photoshop to some extent, but there really isn't any hard and fast rule: in Photoshop, everything is about making it look right. If it does look right, then it is right.

Re: My Xmas project
hi,
i don't know the style but on this picture ( half right side) is duplicate wings layers, sharp a bit, use brush in color mode sampling hair, jacket and this algae on the floor and brush as you like, duplicate again use radial bur (about 25) and use layer mode :tick drop shadow, inner shadow and 'bled if: this layer white to 123,underlaying white 247;change opacity to 93 and blending mode to difference (try to make kind of lather jacket look on top of wing and white highlights rest) - then- as Master Steve said make soft light gradient layer black-white -its works perfect.Last thing is to under exposure the top window-use dark brush shadow and do as you can see...and then you go
ps.please mind its only my opinion and I don't take take responsibility for negative effects

no no - don't take this the wrong way. from what I see it's GREAT!!!! & I will try it. your procedure is new to me. I'm a cut and place, blur feather type of guy. Just wanted a bigger example so I could see more of the detail to try and duplicate.

I all ways appreciate the help, especially with examples
