Challenge 312: Pencil carving
An intriguing article in the free London newspaper Metro last week about Dalton Ghetti, an artist who carves sculptures from pencil leads. Read the story here, and there are more examples here. Extraordinary stuff. He says he takes up to two and a half years to create each carving - you've got a week to do a similar job. And it occurred to me it might be interesting to carve the wood, as well as the graphite. This week's challenge was suggested by Nick Curtain, who also provided the excellent macro photography. Cheers, Nick. High res is here. ![]() +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Note: I'm off to France for a couple of weeks to get my batteries recharged (and, of course, to stock up on Friday Challenge subjects). About 40 minutes inland from La Rochelle, if anyone's in the neighbourhood. David Asch will be posting Friday Challenge entries while I'm away, and I'll write up this and next week's when I return in the last week in August. Have fun while I'm away, and no squabbling. |

You are more than welcome to pop in for a proper cup of tea if you happen to be in the Limoges area, which is in department 'La Creuse' Directions can be found on our site: www.bigbobsbb.net Bon voyage! _________________ “Life's disappointments are harder to take when you don't know any swear words.” http://scrapworkart.blogspot.com/ |

Hi, I'm back with the Easter Island Pencil Heads. It's amazing what Dalton Ghetti can do with a razor blade. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 312: Pencil carving
Buckminster Fullerene molecule or 'Buckyball'. A Fullerene is any molecule composed entirely of carbon, in the form of a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, or tube. Spherical Fullerenes are also called buckyballs, and cylindrical ones are called carbon nanotubes or buckytubes. Fullerenes are similar in structure to graphite, which is composed of stacked graphene sheets of linked hexagonal rings; but they may also contain pentagonal (or sometimes heptagonal) rings. ![]() Some really nice images from everyone so far. _________________ Why is there only one body to investigate Monopolies ? |
