Challenge 447: Island story
I saw this palm tree in Barcelona a few weeks ago - and a splendid specimen it is, too. Just the sort of thing you might see on a desert island. Now if I were a performance artist and had a grant from the local council, I'd put in a bid to build a desert island around the tree, and would sit there dressed in suitable shipwreck apparel for the entertainment of passers-by. Can you help me visualise the scene? High res is here.  |

How I did it: I went into channels and found that the blue channel had the most contrast, so I duplicated this channel and selected it(while deselecting all the other channels); next, I went to levels and sliding the black slider towards the right until I got optimum contrast; then I used the magic wand tool to select it on its own layer, and making sure ALL the palm leaves were selected; afterwards, I used the REMOVE WHITE MATTE several times; finally, I selected the REPLACE COLOUR with the eye dropper on the whitish blue which I had to do several times (so many hues of whitish blue), and making sure that I didn't posterize the rest of the image. All that was left to do was re-saturate the green and make a duplicate copy which I flipped horizontally to produce a fuller tree. The second set of two is of a Saharan desert scene showing the original palm tree in the first.

Hi Michael, After making the mask from the blue channel, you can paint with white over the outer needles in the modus Overlay to bring them back, before you replace the colours. You can also use the Layer Style Inner Glow (Blend Mode: Normal) to colour the blue needle ends.
