Challenge 457: The celestial sphere
I photographed this beautiful celestial sphere at the fantastic Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris recently - and it's worth looking here to see the splendid virtual tour of the building.

The object was displayed in a rather dull case; can you place it in a more appropriate location?

High res is here. This was a particularly tricky cutout, so you'll be pleased to see I've done it for you - it's a png file, so should download with the alpha channel intact.

Sorry, I think the sun must have addled my brain.
When I open this in photoshop the layer comes up as "index", and everything is greyed out. I can't make a new layer or anything. I tried making a new channel from the selection, still no luck.
There must be something really simple.

Ah yes - this is a byproduct of converting it to a PNG file.

Change the mode from Index to RGB and everything will work as normal.

Hi Steve, thank you for the cutout, it looks fantastic and so well done. I am terribly struggling with cut outs. Is there any tutorial that you can recommend? the more I practice, the worst I get. I am very disappointed at myself when it comes to cutouts, and about to give up. Thank you

I started by selecting all the background with the Magic Wand tool, then made a layer mask using Hide Selection. I then just painted on the layer mask to refine it. Oh, and I've set up a key - F2 - to turn the layer mask on and off, which is much quicker than reaching for the Layers panel. Remember, you can paint on a layer mask even when it's disabled.

It did take a long time!

Steve of course knows the right answer and I don't want to impede Emy or Steve, but if you'd asked me I'd say:
If you have trouble using the Pen tool, just paint with black on a mask. Hold Shift and keep clicking along the edges.
You could use a 90% hard brush to soften the edges a little bit. And: zoom in!
Succes! (And thanks BigVern!)

Hello Steve,
Am I thinking correctly when I assume that you only use your F2 key to repaint along an edge with white where you black painted too far over the edge? I tried painting on a turned off Layer Mask, but in my perception you can't see any result, except when repairing mistakes. Is that the benefit you recommended?

Oh, never mind Steve! I read your reply again and encountered the words Hide Selection. Now I see what you mean!

This display also boasts a miniature "Farnese Atlas Celestral Globe" - oldest known representation of a celestral sphere. Thanks for the cutout Steve.
