Challenge 526: The celatone
I went to the Steampunk exhibition at the Royal Observatory yesterday, which was largely rather disappointing. The best exhibit, though, was this superb model of a celatone.

First proposed by Galileo, the celatone shown here is a telescope with a separate viewfinder, designed to be worn on a ship: you only have one hand to hold the telescope, as presumably the other has to grip the rigging, handrail or other immovable object to stop you falling over.

Can you show how this device might be worn? The close-up photograph might mean a tricky perspective!

High res is here.

Incidentally, those of you concerned about the image quality in Friday Challenges will be pleased to know that I now have an iPhone 6, which offers a vastly improved over my previous 4s. I'm still not going to carry an SLR around with me, but I think you'll agree that this image - photographed in available light without a flash - really isn't at all bad, for a telephone.

I'm afraid I will have to miss out on this one, off to Fiji on Tuesday.

This a departure from my normal realistic photo style into tastelessly kitsch bad chroma key from one of those late night shopping channel ads. Wanna buy a celatone?

I really enjoyed myself!

Incidentally, moving the girls hand and arm from her hip to the celatone is the first time I have ever managed to find a use for the much over hyped puppet warp tool. Never thought I would.

Long range forecasts make voting irrelevant.

Re: Challenge 526: The celatone
Once again I have to submit at the last minute.

Stan was sure his new celatone would be a chick magnet at the Steampunk convention. His wingman, Peter, wasn't so sure.

Re: Challenge 526: The celatone
First to don the celatone was Ant Snell, with a trio of steampunk-wearing women on whom it looks just right. That hand's in a great position to hold it, too - and I like the added vignette, which focuses attention on the woman in the middle.

A Gaultier-inspired entry from DavidMac, with a couple of truly cheeky sailors seeming wholly unimpressed by the celatone-wearing girl between them. Glad you've finally found a use for the Puppet Warp tool, David - it's a big favourite of mine. I like the wrecked ship, and the beautiful smooth tones.

A great pollster from brewell, whose celatone seems no help at all in predicting the 2016 election. A very neatly assembled frame and map - but what's that star behind him?

I like the way Galileo is demonstrating the celatone to a bunch of clerics in tooquilos's entry. Again, that bishop has his hand in exactly the right place to be holding the handle, which makes the whole image look completely natural. I love the shock in the animated version of moving from the static painting to that glorious representation of the solar system - did you really animate each of those planets and moons? Fantastic!

A modified Galileo statue from Linda Eckert, with his supposed statement - Eppur si muove (and yet it moves) - rendered, unusually, in German. Maybe you should have reattached the strap? And you're absolutely right about the second entry: bringing the water in front of the statue really helps to move it back in space. I would, however, point out that the text is sloping upwards on the base; if you draw vanishing lines from the bottoms of the letters, they'd all point towards the horizon.

A neatly modified Galileo sculpture from Ben Boardman, with new hands very delicately treated to make them blend in with the original. I like the wind blowing the candle, a nice touch.

I laughed out loud at Daniel Millar's vision of Obama, whose pointing hand holds the celatone beautifully. However, I'd like to make one suggestion: make the ellipse at the end of the celatone wider, and it will appear as if the whole device looks in the direction of his pointing finger, rather than off to the side:

I enjoyed Darren's Star Wars themed entry, with its large array of panels and overlaid images, although I don't begin to understand all the references here - or, indeed, why the text has been set in Symbol. It's all Greek to me.

A novel use of a celatone from Emil, here masquerading as a futuristic soldier's gun. Beautiful treatment of the device, blending it in perfectly with the rest of the scene. So what's its firepower like?

A couple of steampunk aficionados from srawland, with one of them very neatly holding the celatone - a nicely replaced arm, there. Chick magnet, though? I don't see the device as much of an aphrodisiac.

I'm always impressed by the skill of this Forum, and very often by your imagination and ingenuity - but this week really is exceptional. Amazingly good entries!

That was part of the graphics in the original background image. If you're implying that it should be taken out, you're probably right, but Americans love superfluous graphics.
