Challenge 530: Blow my top
I spent last weekend on the glorious and fascinating island of Lanzarote, off the west coast of Africa. It's one of the Canary islands, and is most notable for the volcanic eruptions which, between 1730 and 1736, covered much of the island in molten lava. The result is a landscape that seems barely of this planet. Here's a shot of one of the now dormant volcanoes, taken from the road just above it. Can you show me how it would look if it were to go off again? High res is here.  |

About 10 years ago we took a helicopter trip over the island of Montserrat to see the volcano in action. It was both a fascinating and sobering experience. I have dug back into my archives and retrieved one of my photos. For this challenge I have moved part of Montserrat a little to the east and added it to Lanzarote!  _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

My overwhelming memory of the Lanzarote volcano was being stuck in a coach hanging over the side of a 100ft drop as our drive tried to pass another coach who had broken down half way up the volcano. The newspaper headlines “Coach full of British tourist’s falls into centre of volcano” flashed before my eyes.  |
