Challenge 878: Frenchmen needed
Here's a reconstruction of an old French café that I photographed at the splendid Musée des Commerces d'Autrefois in Rochefort, half way down France. The museum is built in an old warehouse with a gallery around each floor, which means you can stand at the top and see right down to the bottom.

So here's the standard Challenge: populate this scene with period-appropriate French men and women.

High res is here.

For those who like an extra Challenge: populate this view of the same scene instead.

High res is here.

Rather pedantic question, but do you know when this re-construction is supposed to be?

Round about 1900, according to the website.

Oh. Napoleon was well dead by then.

Well I would never have guessed so early!

In the end I have gone for nineteen thirties black and white movie. It was surprisingly tricky and I haven't really quite pulled it off. But it was fun to try. Finding period people with good enough definition is very hard. The transparent glassware on bar and tables also makes adding new people quite 'interesting'.

Re: Challenge 878: Frenchmen needed
Owing to recent construction of a new ceiling since Mr Caplin's visit this view of the bar is no longer available.

Here's the last. Circa 1900 as per Steve's research.

Re: Challenge 878: Frenchmen needed
Do three things David: 1. reduce the excessive brilliance of the lady's white blouse (and hat) as well as the white thing the old lady is holding. 2. give the lady with the white blouse a bit more "sepia" treatment (the lady in the far background could benefit too. 3. reduce the contrast of that lady in the white blouse.

This having been accomplished you will have the "un-photoshopped" original photo. which is...will be brilliant

PS...or your uncle Mike can do it for you if you like...

Poirot and Miss Marple. Now there's a team!

The bats are a great idea! Little bit of a shame about the fringing but I love this image.

Michael. Your points are well taken. Fair comment. I have a very busy week coming up which is why I knocked these all out so quickly. I cannot promise to find the time to correct. If I can I will have a go. It would improve things.

Ha, I find Rowan Atkinson as Jules Maigret more of a 'stretch'.

David, the fringing was added by me in an attempt to give the bats better definition, but removed for this 'Bats returning before daylight' version. I agree that the animation is probably better sans 'fringing'.

Missed him entirely!!

I find de-fringed bats much better.

Re-submission of 1900's with changes suggested by Monsieur Sinclair plus a couple of tiny mods of my own. Much better.

Quite remarkable David, there is absolutely no way that the casual viewer would ever think this image isn't the real thing. Well done!
