Challenge 1077: A spooky house
Yes, it's Halloween time again. I spotted this house in La Rochelle, just across the street from last week's pavilion. It's a glorious fantasy of a building, which deserves a more spectacular location. And I'm sure it would look great with the lights on. High res is here. |

Gosh! Powerful stuff all round. This is setting the bar high. Ben I have to single you out ....... your photographers eye and feel for light really shine through in both yours. Where's Daenerys Targaryen, Gordon? Anna sometimes you make difficult things look so simple. Another good giggle. Is that a young Ant? I am sure you have all experienced this at one time or another. I managed to get myself trapped in a seemingly endless spiral of fiddling with this one. Trying all sorts of variations but somehow never quite getting there and getting progressively more stale and frustrated with each iteration. In the end I stopped and did the 'sleep on it' test. In the fresh light of another day I am still not really satisfied, but ready to say 'when' and post anyway.
Since a huge amount of tricky blending and lighting went into this I thought it might interest you to see the raw elements as they were found. The two black and white elements are cloud renders created by me to produce the ground mist. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Wow... lot's of great entries! I am once again reminded of how grateful I am that this is not a competition, I would have dropped out years ago. Love the aged image Anna! The squirrel is such a great touch of whimsy Ben! I wouldn't change a thing David, you've put a lot into this one. |

Re: Challenge 1077: A spooky house
Was up too early today and bored... not spooky, didn't turn on the lights, perspective is not quite right, and have thirty minutes invested in it, so I decided to post it anyway. (Local lake and dam near my house.)

Okay, I don't get it. What am I doing wrong? I miss Imgur. Flickr is downsizing my uploaded images, in both dimension and file size. Top is from Flickr and the bottom is original size that was uploaded. I also notice that posted images by all of you have a + sign when viewed to increase viewing size... mine do not.

I love the variations. They are very free. As you say, the perspective in the second is odd. The Perspective Warp filter would probably have worked for this as you could do left and right side independently. It's a shame because in visual terms it's a perfect fit. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1077: A spooky house
Just seen your Flickr problem. Flickr will export any size you want. Just in case you're doing something unexpected, this is what you do: Select your image in your Photostream and double click it. The image will show large. Click the Share Photo arrow bottom right. In the pop up dialogue that appears make sure you have BBC Code selected in the top line. Below the embed code there should be a drop down menu offering all the different size options. Select the size you want and then copy the embed code for use here. Works for me every time. Are you doing something else? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks for trying to help David. I've tried your suggestions, but all I get is this:
Doesn't give me an option for larger size. Oh well, I can get along without it. |

Thank you for your kind comment David. As does your cinematographers eye. Your in the rain image captures the film-noir meets Gothic suspense mood beautifully. Love the strong chiaroscuro effect. |

Loyd I don't want to clutter this thread with a very lengthy post so I have replied to your problem with a lot of detail in reply to your Test image in Test Yourself. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Some very good entries, I particularly like Ben's camera entry. Agree David, kept playing around and finally said time to quit although not entirely happy with outcome. ![]() |
