Challenge 1098: Fox and Friends
My son Joe was at London's Design Museum yesterday, where an exhibition about Wes Anderson included these props from his film The Fantastic Mr Fox. They're tiny figures, in reality – but can you find a landscape in which they'd fit, and perhaps create some more characters for them to interact with?

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 1098: Fox and Friends
This kind of research is usually done by Mariner but, because I have lit a few miniature sets for stop frame animators and know at first hand the endless patience and dedication needed by them, I thought this might be of interest. It's from Stop Motion Magazine. Its an account and video of the making of the Fantastic Mr Fox and puts into perspective the incredible amount of work involved.

On a another level entirely it opened my eyes to the financial implications of this movie.

Here's a quick précis: Released in 2009, running time of an hour and 28 minutes, a budget of $40 million, and a box office of $46,471,023 Fantastic Mr. Fox has become not only a financial success but a cult classic. A staff of 140 worked everyday, paying special attention to the smallest details, developing 126 different sets and over 4,000 gypsy styled-inspired props.

One of the challenges in production was the different scenes, some of them jumping from wide shots to close ups. For this purpose, production made 6 different puppet sizes: For the full shots, they used puppets no bigger than 2 inches, and 12 inches articulated puppets for the close-ups.  In total 535 puppets were made, including changing costumes.

$40 million! I had no idea!!

Sadly, none of this has yet bought me any closer to thinking how to use the rather posed rigid looking figures presented here. Hmmmmm .........

Yes, this one is difficutl David. The behind-the-scenes video didn't help much and I don't have time to see the movie. I have made Mr Fox's face look more believable and that helps. Finding better faces for the other two is going to be hard. As for their hairy bodies, I think I can manage that.

These are fun Ben. The bar is especially good. You've fitted them into the atmosphere perfectly. I love the loosened tie. Did you use 'replace' for her uniform?

Wes Anderson meets Nick Park ........ now there's one to ponder on.

I absolutely love the new rotate feature in Photoshop. Thank you Steve for pointing it out.

I can see you do! You've really gone to town!

I have gone from sceptical dislike of this tool to being very impressed. I have just done a long post of tests here.

This is classical Mariner. Beautiful clean work. But I can't help but feel that 'cleaned up' Mr and Mrs Fox have become completely different people (or foxes) and poor Kylie has gone through a full genus change.

I love the panicked chickens!

Thanks David. In the original Mr & Mrs Fox look like tatty stuffed animals so I smartened them up a bit. Now they look a bit more like film stars. And Kylie is supposed to be a badger. Well, badgers usually have black and white striped faces. The panicked chickens? Now that was the easy bit.

On the whole image in one go or on a layer by layer, character by character basis?

I thought Kylie was an opossum. I just did a quick search to check and it seems to bear me out.

But you've made him into a splendid badger!
