Not to worry Steve it seems that IE 6 is "nuts" I opened the Hi Res in PS and it was 8 bit RGB file. Even if IE saved it as a BMP. I just saved it as a JPG and had no problems with it. I was just curious as to why my browser was acting up. |

Hmm, that's odd. That's a sure sign that it's full (I have to do it once a week almost). Might be an idea to reserve some more space too. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Re: Contest 17: Day for night
Greetings, Steve and gang! I've had the book for around a year now, but only just found this site last night. Great stuff! I've had almost as much fun perusing the forums as I have with the techniques I learned from the book. I realize that this is a bit late, but I thought I would make an entry in the "Challenge" as my first post. Nothing fancy, just switched out night for day, as requested. I'll try to be a bit more creative from here on. ![]() ![]() |

Bizarly I am having the same probs with the pic saving as a Bitmap rather than JPEG. I too have tried your solution Trinity but still no joy. Am going to save it as Jpeg in PS as suggested by MJ, but thought I would share. |

Hmmm, most odd. Just to clarify, the following is what you should be doing to clear the files. You may also want to change the size of the cache allocation (done through the Settings option). ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Contest 17: Day for night
I knew this would be a tricky challenge - but I had no idea it would attract so many really good entries. You all managed to make that neon sign glow - well done, all round. Have you all been reading the same Photoshop book, by any chance? TrinityOfOne was first off the mark this week, with an entry turned in after just 45 minutes. Nice glow, David, but I think you rather rushed the night effect! For a perfect example of what could have been achieved, uk2usadaz came up with an entry that's simply stunning. The hint of disco seen through the glass panels, the shine on the door from the building across the street, the tasteful but not overdone neon - all these elements combined to make a thoroughly convincing scene. She may have been later than usual, but maiden's brilliant entry turned the whole thing on its head. Apart from the great joke, the body language of the bouncers is just perfect, the doors have been opened with great skill, and the perspective inside - um - well, it very nearly matches… It's been a while, but MJ has followed the theme of sticking my mug in the picture. A good overall night effect there, although I think the windows could have glowed a little more: feather those yellow edges and fill again, and it'll look much more confusing. Also, read Chapter 5 again, Shadows on the Wall - that girl needs supporting! An innovative twilight approach from tweaknik, and a great rain effect. I love the reflection in the concrete floor, it really adds to the scene - and I think you're the only one to have created a reflection of the neon sign in the backboard. Details, details! Nothing wrong with submitting two entries, ChrisPucci, especially when you come up with a good gag for the second. nicely opened door, and the crowd barriers are a great touch (Hemera Photo Objects?). But surely that barrier shadow should have gone behind the barrier, rather than in front??? Other than that, a great angel (even if it does look worryingly like Cilla Black), a good gag, and a well-opened door. Always nice to see a touch of animation in here, and John-BoB's restrained flashing works a treat. Now if only the scene through the door could link to a Flash animation so we could see those lights swirling! Again, watch the perspective on those open doors - this one's falling off its hinges... Well, it may not be night exactly, but Sphere's topical entry shows our wayward prince with attendant papparazzi. Bit of a perspective problem here - the top edge of the door should be going up from the hinge, not down - but two unique innovations. The shop next door is now lit on the inside, as shops so often are at night. And why is he the only one to have thought of turning on those security spotlights? It's always a great pleasure to welcome newcomers to the forum, particularly when they launch straight into the Challenge. A thoroughly competent entry from Brian Garrison, with some great lighting there: the neon sign is perfect, and the glow from inside the windows works really well. That subtle shading indicating the width of the window frame is a really nice touch. At first glance, it looked as if another new entrant, FP, had entered the wrong competition - until I read the caption. I really like it when people completely subvert the intent of a contest, particularly when it's done with such care. The driving snow is thoroughly convincing (what's your technique?) and that character on the far left provides a much-needed foreground element that really draws us into the scene. Great composition, great approach, great attention to detail. On a final note, I'm sorry so many of you have been having trouble with downloading BMP files. I don't think this is my fault, but I'm willing to be put right if it is. I'd love to help but my knowledge of Windows is minimal. Fortunately, we have a technical support boffin on hand - thanks, Trinity, for your assistance! |

Yes, it was a rush job, I've not been entering the contests much these days, so I had a quick play. Great work everyone! _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Yes sorry about the perspective of the interior I had several Free Transformation tussles with the image and it never entirely matched whichever way I tweaked the vertices. I could have opted for another interior but I liked the look of that one and it nearly matched. ![]() _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Contest 17: Day for night
Thanks Steve. My method for the snow.... Some white dabs on a layer, copy 'til layer is full. Wind filter - blast a couple of times then gausian blur, transform and rotate, reduce the opacity to 37% copy the layer a couple of times until it looks right. Might be a long winded way of doing things but - it works for me ! |
