But your R and D are the wrong way round in MURDER.
Unless you wanted it like that.

What a

Yes the R & D are supposed to be reversed I wanted to get the same affect as in the film The Shining - but after looking at this image it's actually the E & R that are reversed D'oh!

In my defence I was looking as some Shining fan-site art and they had reversed the R & D - Oh well I stand my my version it's too late to change it all now.

Chris,

Getting the 3D look on a spherical object is a real pain!

Normally, if you're cutting something out, it's a simple case of creating a darker/lighter offset layer behind but because of the viewpoint, this won't work.

I used the dual layer method but created the lettering with paths. I cut the outer layer, then edited the paths slightly before cutting out the rear layer. There are still bits to tidy up afterwards, where the layers don't meet. I used the polyganal lasso to join them, sampling and filling the selection with the same colour as the second layer.

Thanks for the tip Trinity. I think I am going to have another go at the pumpkin. My first attempt was a bit poor.

Okay, here is what has become my customary 2nd attempt at the friday challenge. Trinity's excellent entry inspired me to have another go at it. His entry gave me a couple of ideas which I wanted to see if I could try. I hope it hasnt come across as I have simply copied his excellent image. I am new to photoshop and producing montages so I thought I would give it a whirl.

Re: Contest 18: Halloween
What a great crop of pumpkins! Starting off with some nice cutout lettering from ChrisPucci - especially like the way you've missed out the middles of the O, A and R there, Chris. Perhaps the text is all too straight, though: I'd have used a small degree of Spherize to shape it round the pumpkin. Fun second post, though! A first post from the minimally-named i, and a good cheerful expression. Not a great sense of the thickness of the vegetable there, but it's certainly a design I'll copy next Halloween.

MJ, a great entry - some really fine wall thickness there, and a nifty candle too. Your pumpkin's features appear to have been nibbled away by trained mice rather than cut with a knife - but hey, it works. Great glow! And a splendid entry from FP (what is it with all these one- and two-letter nicknames?). Congratulations on being the first to remember to lift the lid! Love those dark edges where the cat was originally drawn in pen - a really special touch. The 3D effect is simply perfect, too. Good gag in your second entry, too!

Looks like maiden has had a week off work - three entries to one competition? OK, why not. The first was excellent - a perfectly drawn glow, love the reflection in the knife, the cutout stencil was really well judged. Seeing myself half-morphed into Jack Nicholson in your second entry was a bit of a shock - but great drippy blood lettering, and I the pumpkin gag is excellent. A thoroughly beautiful candle in your final entry, too!

Good to see Ryan making a rare appearance - and a good cheeky expression on your pumpkin. Nice candle, and I particularly like the way the cutouts are all physically possible. John-BoB, that's a great approach - after all, cheating's what it's all about. A nice take on the problem, thanks for contributing!

The physical impossibility of Atomicfog's entry is one thing - but it's certainly a striking image. Interestingly, yours is the first entry in which the pumpkin itself really appears to glow: this one really could be lit from within.

The man in black's back - Trinity has weighed in with a splendid piece of work. The 3D cutout effect of the lettering works really well there, and the light cast on the floor in front was just inspired. Thanks for explaining your technique - although your knowledge of classic movies of the late 20th Century is somewat lacking, it would appear.

Excellent lettering in Brian Garrison's entry - it's a regular typeface, but it's absolutely appropriate; and your sphereize filter has done the job perfectly. The 3D effect on the walls is spot on, well done there!

All in all, a great set of entries. This was a really tricky one, and I think we all learned some useful techniques from it. I'll be doing a tutorial on this sort of 3D cutout in the next edition, for those of you who had particular difficulty with it.
