I just realized that we have been taking the entirely wrong approach. This shows that the prject can be accomplished much more efficiently and economicaly with no concerns of mismatched paint or woodwork.

Re: Contest 64: Stop the rot
Well, this was certainly a tricky Challenge. Great to see so many varied an innovative approaches - and some really great techniques, too.

First off was mguyer, with a near-perfect solution to the problem. The mouldings beneath the tiers of the table clearly caused more problems - but the later addition of flowers were a neat workaround for that one (although I do feel your flower arranging techniques are perhaps a little regimented).

Great water effect from Lexus, with a fine implementation of Flaming Pear's Flood filter. This view, though, would be of water seen a long way off; when we're this close, you need to change the settings to get much bigger, less convoluted ripples. Good to see you back, Alex, hope the GCSE revision isn't too much for you.

Another classical approach from kenny, with perfect alignment of mouldings and thoroughly well drawn shadows. The only thing that's tripping me up here is the shading on the mouldings themselves; the light seems to be coming from too many different directions. But a really well worked-up job, very neatly done.

You really have to admire the approach rufus has taken. If you're to learn one lesson from the book, it's to cheat wherever possible! By wallpapering the room he's neatly sidestepped the problem of matching the mouldings to the wall shading, and distracted the eye perfectly. Not to mention the skill in papering - look at the subtle offset and shadow where the wall turns a corner on the left, there. And the later version, with the wall reflected in the fireplace, is just perfect!

A good gag from jwhite, although probably only intelligible to those who watched British TV in the 1970s. A fair stab at patching the mouldings, but you really need to blend that shading in with the surroundings! Love the idea of replacing that painting with a plasma TV, though. Are they really as bright as that?

Taking the furniture out was an inspired solution, BobbyJo, but I'm not sure I'd hire you as a decorator. With that table removed, the solution would have been to completely rebuild the bottom half of the wall, using mouldings from above. You'd have found this far simpler than covering up the table bit by bit with the Clone tool!

uk2usadaz has given us an unusually restrained entry this week - but what a great job it is. The lighting and the mouldings match perfectly, and changing the shading on the whole wall was an inspired solution. Great job, expertly accomplished.

I suppose it's fitting that as mguyer started this week, he should also finish things off. I really like that huge painting on the wall, and replacing the skirting board with a gilt picture frame is such a neat touch. Can you imagine what a dramatic room it would be if we actually did this! They really should make still life wallpaper…

Well done, everyone, this was a really tricky challenge and I'm glad to see so many of you had a shot at it. I'm going to keep throwing in these 'back to basics' tests every now and again, interspersed into the more imaginative ones, to keep your basic skills up!

Why has no one commented on the figurine? I felt certain that Steve would have noticed something different.

Ha! It was so well done I didn't even notice it! Anyone else spot him taking a cigarette break in the cropped-in image? Nice work!
