Re: Contest 193: The rooftops of Egypt
Hi James, your'e gonna hit yourself when I tell ya: There were only two frames, so I started with two identical starry nights. I selected the paintbrush tool and browsed through all the different categories of brush until I found a star-burst effect, then I selected foreground colour to white and placed a size 38 star-burst effect to some of the brighter stars in one frame (clicking more than once on the same exact spot may be necessary), and in the other frame did the same, but on other brighter stars that had not yet been "touched-up". ![]() |

Wow Tom, that is fantastic. Have been trying for about four days, on and off to get the wings right. Still not right, but it could be a very long job. Might get them right by contest 293! ![]() |

Re: Contest 193: The rooftops of Egypt
A lot of Aladdin mixed with Prince of Persia this week: plenty of shadowy figures looking sinister. First up was Ben Mills, with a splendid entry: an excellent and definitely moonlit character on the rooftop, with what looks like a painstakingly hand drawn sky behind him. There’s a great composition to this image, with the opposing diagonals of the white streak and the shooting star; and that lit up window adds a lot of visual interest low down. Very crisp, very appealing image. It’s the red lights in mguyer’s post that gives this one life: it’s closer to dusk than night, but the effect works well. A great idea - they obviously didn’t think about these issues when designing their roofs! And a cute second entry - but that girl needs to be lit more from the right, with shadow on the left. I like the way tooquilos has her magic carpet fly off screen so it can fly back on in the other direction - a useful GIF animator’s trick. But the pair on the carpet have swapped places: if it reappeared with him on the other side of her it would be impressive indeed. Some great added detail here, with the carved eye, the huge moon and that flickering lamp - I especially like the way it levitates onto the carpet. A rather beautiful dragon from brewell, sitting neatly between the corners of that tower: and an impressive texture and lighting effect, too. But for me the best thing about this image is the shadows, hand drawn to fit the characters. The man on the left has it just right, but the one at the bottom seems to have swapped the hand he’s carrying that spear in! Or is it just the angle of view? A decidedly Western place setting for Nick Curtain’s restaurant, but I’m glad to see Ali Baba took the time to carve the name on the beam. So if that’s the rooftop outside, where is this restaurant? On an adjoining rooftop? An amazing cutout job, though - and Ali himself does look well in control of things. This is only the second Friday Challenge entry from JamesB, but it’s a huge improvement: a beautiful and sensitive piece of work, with a set of buildings that fit perfectly into the scene. The figure sitting on the wall adds both pathos and a much needed human scale to the image - although, for compositional reasons, I’ve have placed him to one side or the other. Very fine work, James. Well, they do say cats are sacred in Egypt... and Ellen’s entry fills the landscape with them. Good scaling here, accentuating the perspective of the scene - but shouldn’t all these felines be casting shadows? A first entry from new member 12dstring, with an attractive setting for Aladdin. A good night view, and the stream of sparks shooting out of the back of the magic carpet works particularly well. A rather curious choice of starry background, though, given that your main occupation seems to be photographing stars... some fantastic images on your site! Welcome to the forum, David. Loads of twinkle from michael sinclair, both in the stars and a great flicker seen through the lit windows. There’s something rather creepy about that wild-eyed bat hanging in space - I wish you’d add a few frames so it can fly away! A range of magic carpets from james: the second one on view enlarges neatly as it approaches us (and that must have meant a new layer for each size, of course). Best of all is the loop-the-loop - a real classic. Fantastic. I do look forward to your animations. Glad to see salfordnurse likes Casablanca so much - a classic, indeed. And Egypt is close enough to Morocco, especially if you live in Salford... I like the technique here, but feel Bogie and Bergman are perhaps just too faint in the sky. A little stronger, please. A great setting for Indiana Jones in Mick Malkemus’ entry, and there’s certainly a full cast here. But while all the picture elements are nestled neatly into the background, there’s no sense of interaction here: perhaps it’s that they’re spaced just a little too evenly, but I’d like to see some of them acknowledging each others’ existence. It’s close with the octopus-like genie eyeing Indy, but the other figures all see too camera struck. Plenty of action from vibeke, and Disney has been well plundered for this image. What works well for me here is the interaction: the genie’s looking at the characters on the carpet, who are looking at Aladdin on the rope... and the figures in the background add general interest. A great man in the moon, too. I’m concerned that the top of Aladdin’s rope isn’t attached to anything, though. And what’s that rectangular patch in the sky? We haven’t seen an entry from Tom for a while, which makes them all the more welcome when they do appear. Tom, of course, is an artist, and this is abundantly clear in his work: gorgeous textures, beautiful composition, a tremendous feel for lighting and depth. Wonderful work. Good to see you back. A stunning hand crafted flying horse from Deborah Morley: I see what you mean about the wings! I think the near one’s fine, but the one on the other side could perhaps be a little smaller, in perspective. A great pose from the horse, though, and the figure on the rooftop works perfectly. Excellent. An Egyptian Mary Poppins from katew, with five chimney sweeps in search of a chimney (but making the usual song and dance about it). Mary herself seems to be trailing smoke - does she need oiling? A very cute idea, though, and the shadowy figures work very well. Splendid work from mariong: the pyramids are a great background, and that snake wafts beautifully out of the bottle. A great sense of lighting, too: very tasty stuff. So do you have your laptop with you in Bavaria, Marion? Or are you spending your time in Photoshop-equipped internet cafes? Another enjoyable week. |

Re: Contest 193: The rooftops of Egypt
Hi Steve From your comments it would seem that my objective has not been totally successful this week. The intention was to portray a rooftop restaurant overlooking the city, so the diners have a birds eye view of what's going on below. Therefore, the viewer is actually in the restaurant overlooking the table near the edge of the veranda. You will see that Ali has his back to the low level wall. Nick |

Many thanks Steve. My challenge is to keep on trying with the wings and to try and get them a bit more lifelike. Well as lifelike as wings on a horse can be! |

Thanks Steve. I was aiming for one of those Disney-type trails behind Mary, but perhaps I made it a bit light and not twinkly enough! |
