Maja, your image of the cobblestone laneway is fantastic!

Nice pictures so far. Here's mine.

Luis, I really get the feeling of a cold dark night without wind and lots of rain. Nice job.

Maya, I think yours is the best I've seen in all the posts I've been involved in so far. Maybe there's something wrong with it, but I can't find it. Really nice work!

Steve, I propose we give Maja the name: "Goddess of Illusion"

What do you think?

Thank you Mick - that's very kind words. You were very brave to go first this week. The rope is a very witty idea. I love that and the splash of red in your second attempt too!

Hi Mick.

Thanks for your comments. I like your second attempt. Did you create the rope in photoshop?

Re: Contest 197: Lighting up time
Maja, I agree that your lamp and alleyway images are beautifully rendered. You set a very high standard.

I only have one very small niggle and that is that the lamps are high on the wall and the street urchin is also lit from above and to the left suggesting he is illuminated mainly by those lamps.

The urchin's shadow on the wall would, however, suggest (as it rises above and behind him) that he is being lit from below and in front of him. Sorry for being picky

Thank you, BigVern, I was very unsure about the shadow and you are absolutely right. I learn so much here! I will never look the same at street lamps, fountains, glass windows.... the play of shadow and light .... What next?

Do you know what the shadow must look like, so that I can improve it? I'm without Steve's book. Have borrowed it up to now, still waiting for the book I ordered.

Re: Contest 197: Lighting up time
Maja, I am no expert. For expertise you need Steve. But if the main light source is coming from the first lamp then the approximate direction of the light towards the urchin is shown by the white arrow which would mean that the main shadow would be around the base of and in front of the man in the area shown blue.
Of course if you take into account other light sources from the rear and maybe from the front then there will be fainter and less defined shadows on the floor in front of the urchin and maybe also a limited amount low on the wall. Hope this is helpful.

Re: Contest 197: Lighting up time
Thank you BigVern for your trouble! It's tricky though- I think a light source doesn't have to be visible in a image to be a light source. As you can see it is a series of street lamps. There's one just in front of the urchin- just not visible.

I think you are right though with the shadow in front of the urchin (there is one). Because there is more than one light source, there can be a second shadow against the wall- but maybe not quite that long.
