Back on track: In my humble opinion: well executed Nike and Michael,
and again enjoying everyones Friday Challenge entries.

Off track with Michael's:
Here we go ! , but not! Remember Stone Henge and the Celts.

Stupid governments which don't do what their name is at all well.

I am really annoyed. Did I work on Mobile and Land line networks with other (international) engineers, yes. Did we work hard, yes. Did we have conflict, yes. Did we solve the politices, yes. Its very complex technolgy, many smart men and women engineers, .... result you can see 97% successful call success rate internationally, land line 99.999% and not too expensive.

Time never stands still. (I had few other words, but not here now)

Creating an image using Displacement maps is actually very simple and straight-forward; the potential problem occurs when some instructions in some books make a crucial omission: that of de-selecting and removing this desaturated (black and white) layer copy from view after it has been saved as a psd file. Please don't ask me how I discovered this.

A Norwegian bootfisher

The lip around the hole to hold the cover sure looks good, Nick & Nerdtron. I wish mine had one.

Re: Contest 246: Lift the lid
As someone who spent over ten years as as a practicing Civil Engineer (before switching careers to Information Technology) and who has actually designed manholes for storm drains and sewers, I have to comment on the round vs square issue.

In the U.S.A., most, but not all, manhole covers are round. There are various reasons for this. but mainly it comes down to safety and cost. Round covers will not fall into the manhole and don't need any special orientation to fit into the frame (these things typically weigh in the neighborhood of 100 pounds so that's important), they are cast and the circular shape uses the least amount of material and it is easier to machine the surfaces of the cover and frame that mate (which makes them less expensive to manufacture), and specific jurisdictions have standard plans for covers and frames which means the foundary can reuse the mold patterns and further reduce costs.

Round is not the only shape that won't fall through the frame regardless of orientation, there is a thing called a constant width curve (see Reuleaux triangle, for example). However, these are never used as they are too expensive to manufacture.

You will often see a square frame with a round opening where the manhole surfaces in a sidewalk or other area where it would be difficult to cut a clean round opening for the frame. Steves photo shows an excellant example of this. In a street composed of asphalt, macadam, or concrete, the frame is almost always a round ring.

Early manholes came in various shapes, usually rectangular or square. Old Roman sewers used square or rectangular limestone blocks with slots cut into them, for example.

Brewell!
I have been singularly uninspired this week until this morning when I got up - thought "I know I'll have an Inuit fishing through the hole !"
Checked the site and ......

Back to the drawing board

Eye eye Josephine!!

Here's my attempt, I couldn't manage to make an edge for the manhole cover though.

2nd entry. The cover is held in with a friction fit with the cover being slight larger than the opening. Removing the cover is effortless for Superman/
