Why are these things always so much harder than you imagine?

One of Brown's last public appearances??

Nick, a great banner. That game is the most difficult one I know - and I started playing it over twenty years ago!

Re: Challenge 295: The gondolier
Terrific entries this week - makes me wish I was back in Venice (although I wish I was back there anyway).

A beautiful scene from LonnieK , with a perfectly arranged gondola and a great indication of the reflection. The wedding couple fit exactly in place, and the warm tone boosting of the whole image looks perfect. Altogether, a hugely successful job. Very good work.

A doleful image from Nick Curtain, with a gondola going away from us (do they drive gondolas on the right?). A very good fit, but points off for not adding a reflection of the gondola or the oar - especially as we can see the reflected buildings so clearly. A fantastic second entry, with a drained canal - perfect blending make this a really successful piece of work. I had to keep checking the original to see what you'd done here, and it's an excellent job.

A great view from nerdtron, with a good reflection and a very warm overall feeling. Perfect sizing, as well, with the gondolier clearly in proportion with the people on the bridge: very good.

A fine gondolier school from tooquilos, with extra signage and a pedestrian-free bridge - and I like the extra touches, such as the reflection of the blue gondola sign. When I saw the animated version I could see why the bridge had been cleared: good wobbling on the gondola, but shouldn't it increase in size as it comes towards us?

Very clever work from GKB, who has driven a motorway through the city - amazing that you managed to find a road that matched the curvature of the canal so well. If it had been me, I would have cut it down to two lanes to make the cars bigger. I love all the appropriate signage, especially the No Gondolas sign.

A half-sunk gondola from Ben Mills, beautifully achieved - although perhaps the gondolier should be reflected as well? The only real problem here is the reflected gondola, which is at too sharp an angle. Look at where the gondola disappears into the water: the horizontal strut is almost parallel with the water surface, so it should be in the reflection as well. Of course, this would mean rather a lot of disassembly to reconstruct the boat from a different angle, which you may decide simply isn't worth the effort!

I don't know why Josephine Harvatt sees me as a magician so often, but I must admit the clothing works particularly well against this background - and a good torn poster on the wall. I like the hint of the gondola reflection, and of the pole (but watch the angle here) - but I'm sure there's a weight limit on those bridges.

A great idea from brewell, whose "drive-thru" fast food joint works especially well - and I like the way the man's reaching up to take the bag. Perhaps a McDonalds sign sticking out of the building as well? Even without, it's a very clever adaptation.

Venice is, of course, the city of the annual Carnival, as Eva Roth points out - and good to see you back, Eva, after an absence. The gondola and streets are filled with costumed, masked revellers, bringing the city alive. But watch the scale: that guitar is huge compared to the gondolier!

A painterly entry from eblyth00, with a neatly placed gondola. I'm never sure about these fully automated fine art effects; I feel they often simply swamp a good montage without really looking like a painting. It may be worth experimenting with different settings to produce a less strong result.

I like Carlo Alessandro Della Valle's postcard effect, with the gondola coming out of the frame - although an additional shadow beneath the card would have made it stand out more from its background. A neat idea, very nicely created.

"Why are these things always so much harder than you imagine?" asks vibeke - and it's a very good question. After all, on the face of it this is a simple job. Or it would be without the water... a good attempt at the reflection here, but the prow does need to stick down more: look how clear the building reflections are. They're rippled, but not blurred or lacking in detail. Image Warp to the rescue here, I think! I do like your passengers, though - a very neat fit. I like the second entry set at night - perhaps the lights are just a touch too yellow, though?

Plenty going on in james' complex animation, with pedestrians on the bridge and walkways, as well as the floating gondola that enlarges as it approaches us. But look at the extra detail: the gondolier is rowing the boat along, and the water ripples with each frame. Fantastic work, James!

I like Jota120's surfer, cascading through the canal on a tide of surf - and a nice detail in the floating mask in the foreground. But what has happened to the pedestrian on the bridge? I'm having trouble reading what that's supposed to be. Very good blending of the water, though!

An ingenious snow scene from katew - and those are mighty big snowflakes! A slight blue cast to the ice might make it look more icy - and do remember that perspective is needed on the skate tracks! The skater is perhaps rather too big for the scene, but otherwise it's a really nice idea. I wonder if this really happens?

A warm, stately scene from Eggbox, with a good couple in the gondola (although it's odd that she's wearing trousers while he's wearing, um, a skirt). A great angle on the gondola, but the reflection looks more like a shadow: it's an interesting approach, but doesn't match the quality of the reflection from the buildings. I like the boy on the side, and the removed pedestrian on the bridge - an appealing image.

Deborah Morley has a doleful Gordon Brown still flying the flag - getting away from the election for a weekend? I really like the extra gondolas in the background, adding a real sense of traffic to the piece. And very fine reflections, too. In fact, I can’t fault this one - excellent work!

Fantastic congestion from Emil, with a gondola-crammed canal and some replacement spectators. Very good angles on the gondolas, and the interaction is good - I like the fact that people in the near gondola are taking pictures of the one at the back. The reflection needs attention, though; it's sometimes more of a shadow, although the reflected gondolier works well.

A really funny entry from Hope Leslie Laust, although it's hard to see where the idea of an elephant swilling beer came from - I have to admit, it's not an image that springs to mind when I imagine gondolas. I see the elephant has a reflected foot - but, really, from this angle we should be able to see much more of him (her? Hard to tell from the cleverly placed woodwork). And good to see it isn't unbalancing the gondola!

Pulsating ripples from michael sinclair, who likes a good ripple, as we all know. I like the way the gondola rises up and down on the swell - except, of course, that canals are notably swell-free. An interesting technique, though, and it certainly adds to the realism.

A well placed gondola from laddition, at a good angle - but there's a shadow where there should really be a reflection. I can see why you didn't include one, as they are so difficult to create - but that's really what makes all the difference in this montage.

I have to admit that I do struggle with reflections, which differ in character vastly depending on the light and situation. The 'donor' gondola did cast a reflection just as seen, even the oar, I merely changed the colour and lightness of the water and blended them together.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the Mario banner.
