Re: Challenge 306: Wind up the window
Some great entries, well done, they all look good to me, but I am going to have to pass on this one, too difficult for me at this stage, angles and all that..Im useless at that kind of thing. Except I had the idea of black non reflective glass which would really of been cheating! |

No glamorous location here I'm afraid and only a last minute guess at how it might look... Lots of convincing entries this week! ![]() |

Don't worry Michael, as long as that sun stays out, things should dry up in no time at all... |

Re: Challenge 306: Wind up the window
I like doing these purely technical Challenges every now and again, as I think they stretch a different part of our Photoshop brain. This week we had many realistic and convincing solutions, which were very close to the 'truth' - as we'll see at the end of this post. First into the car was LonnieK, with a perfect set of matching clouds. I'm interested that you got the reflection of the air vent in so quickly - a detail that everyone else here clearly agreed with. Are you sure about the reflection of the hand, though? The inside of the car is darker than the outside - would the hand still reflect? Do we usually see reflections of ourselves in car windows in daytime? Subtle reflections from Nick Curtain, with a sharper angle on the reflected air vent - working this one out is rather like bouncing a pool ball off a cushion, really. I like the sense of perspective in the angle of the reflected clouds. A nice extra detail from brewell, whose Florida State Trooper reflects perfectly in that wing mirror. A neat job removing the hand from the door, as well - and I like the dark reflection at the bottom of the window. Some very fine distortions in the second entry, and it's interesting that you think there would be so much reflection. Sure, there's a lot of sun on the dash, but there's very much more sun outside! Some good reflections from Stefano Giacomuzzi, but watch out for those new clouds - they really do need to be the same colour as the other ones! Interesting that you think the reflected air vent should be lower than the original. Surely the window is leaning in, rather than out? Truly outstanding work in the animated version - very well thought out. Just a couple of things: the top of the window shouldn't be cut off to follow the angle of the side mirror; and as the window rolls down, the reflected texture appears to move with it (it should stay where it is). This is something that was pointed out, but it's still there in the second entry, but I'm not sure you got the point: the texture still scrolls with the window. Well planned, and beautifully accomplished, though. Drinking and driving is one thing - but tomiloi would have me drinking something so toxic it glows. I like the new view, and the matching of the clouds on the window is perfect. Would the reflection of the air vent be distorted because the glass is slightly curved? Clever work from Paul 2007, with a part-opened window that shows off some good glazing skills. I particularly like the bird droppings, of course - a beautifully drawn shape and texture! And a great match on the reflected version. This must have taken a lot of thought. I've been removed from the car again, this time in vibeke's entry - with good clouds and a fine New Zealand background (assuming I'm profiling those sheep correctly). Of course, when I took the photo I was pointing the camera downwards, so we should be seeing much more ground than sky. What's the big reflection on the left? I can't quite figure that one out. Excellent work from tooquilos, the first entry to show a decent amount of car interior through the reflected window. And I like the way the angle of the edge of the road matches the angle of the car - it reinforces the sense of perspective. I like the hand tapping in the animated version, and the smashed window at the end is a great feature. The story would have been a lot stronger, though, if the traffic light had changed from red to green - and perhaps the odd car whizzing past in the opposite direction? Far prefer the delivery on Vimeo to Photobucket, by the way. An interesting animation from james, with the reflected fingers rearranged to match the new hand inside the car. I like the way the window goes up and down - and the slight delay between the interior hand waving and the reply from the reflection really makes it. The wave adds a whole new dimension to the animation! A good half-up reflection from Eggbox, and I especially like the added shadows on the door - it certainly suggests much stronger sunlight. Not entirely sure why the car appears to be floating fifty feet above the ground, but I'll put that down to your brain having been whacked by one too many tennis balls. Hope you're wearing a hat out there, Ted. There's a real sense of presence to Deborah Morley's glass - I like the way it reflects the shadow of the interior, and of course the air vent reflection works well. Is the glass now just a little too opaque, though? Neat work from Carlo Alessandro Della Valle, with good clouds and neatly reflected air vents. I like the reflection of the hand and door edge, as well, and the added reflection of the steering wheel is an inspired addition. Good work! Some very subtle reflections from Jota120 - we can still see a lot of the reflected interior of the car in this version, which is as it should be. A few more clouds on the outside of the window, and we're there. I like the new backdrop, too. An appealing new background from Eva Roth, and some good cloud effects. A couple of things about the window, though, both to do with the fact that it's half wound down. First, the tops of car windows are rarely dead straight - they follow the shape of the top of the door. And second, watch your perspective! The 'real' window follows the angle towards the horizon, but the reflected one is too parallel to its base - it needs to converge as well. Well worked-out reflections from Emil, with good distortion on the reflected vent and some clouds that line up well with the originals. A good sense of the glass as a physical object, but are the reflections just too strong? A neat solution from michael sinclair - make it rain! Although it does appear to be raining frog spawn, which is a little disturbing. Hate to be pedantic, Michael, but wouldn't rain run down the window, rather than just sitting on the surface? Good clouds and reflections from Steve Mac - and the faint reflected hand adds a lot to the sense of glass. Even if it really would appear there, though, the placement of the reflected air vent dead in the middle of the mirror looks a little forced: for the sake of balance, I'd move it off to one side. The solution So, how did it really look? Here's the shot I took immediately after the one posted, with the window wound up: ![]() As we can see the air vent is indeed reflected at an angle, just at the top of the mirror. But the reflected clouds are a lot less opaque than many of you expected, and that's largely to do with the relative angles of the glass. The rear window is at a much sharper angle to us, so the angle of incidence is that much greater; in the reflected front window, we've viewing it more head-on, so less light reflects and we can see through it more (I've been helping my son revise for his Physics exams, in case you were wondering where this new-found scientific knowledge comes from). I think the main thing is: car windows are designed to be seen out of! Excellent work from you all this week. My comments have been particularly nit-picking, but that's because the overall standard was so very high. I'd been going to post another technical Challenge along vaguely similar lines, but I think I'll give you all a break and come up with something more fun instead this week... |

Re: Challenge 306: Wind up the window
Thanks Steve I guess that many of us sat in our own cars, in the passenger seat, outside the house, looking like idiots, trying to work out how the interior would be reflected. Not an easy one and glad to see I was not too far out. I was wondering what colour to make the tinted windows and it turned out to be more green than I expected. These challenges are good, because they really make you think. Really enjoyable. Nick |

Re: Challenge 306: Wind up the window
Thanks for your comments Steve. I must admit the car was very close to the edge thus giving the appearance of floating. I'm not sure of the image you have of me at Wimbledon wearing a hat and being whacked by tennis balls! What I do all day is control drivers who transport players and VIPs to the Championships. This is me in action last year. I was so tempted to change the colour of the shirt but that would be cheating wouldn't it? Ted ![]() |
