Variant. (In first, also intended overlight (off) ("on" might be fun, but a distraction as stands now....!)) ![]() |

GKB, This one is my favourite so far, I think because its added a bit of colour and interest to what is a neutral coloured shot. _________________ “-You can't just turn on creativity like a tap. Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
Thank you Jan. I was trying to find a suitable mosaic of a Roman bath house but this had to suffice. The other tries have been pretty good as well with some excellent attempts at sorting out the perspective. It will be interesting to see Steve's original image in the morning. Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
There were some amazingly good attempts to rebuild the mirror in this rather tricky challenge. First up was LonnieK, who has interpreted the shape of the mirror exactly. The reflection of the wall works well, as does the translated clothes stand: all that's slightly out here is the clothes stand shadow (see below). Altogether a seamless, entirely convincing piece of work. An ornate frame from Jan in France, and one that still captures the shape of the original. I particularly like the shadow on the frame here, a very neat touch that blends it in well with the wall behind. A heavy frame, again with the correct shape insert, from tooquilos. The really clever part here (as well as the clothes on the hanger) is the woman's reflection in the mirror, which matches the position of the back of her head perfectly. And a real tour de force in the animated version, as Anna shows us her reflection skills - OK, Anna, point taken! A spooky image from brewell, whose vampire manages not to cast a reflection (which makes you wonder why he's standing in front of the mirror). Great touches such as the flying bat, the toothbrush hanging in mid air, and even the bat's shadow on the wall. Is the whole thing just a touch too dark, though? A good shaped mirror from vibeke, with a neatly matching frame. Hate to mention the P word, but the top of the frame should be sloping down more towards the vanishing point... and the clothes stand needs a reflection too! Great work from Nick Curtain, with a well shaped mirror that exactly matches the glare on the wall, and good reflection. Again, there's the slight issue of the reflected shadow of the clothes stand (see below), but otherwise this is spot on. A good interpretation from Jota120 - although shouldn't the top of the mirror have more of a curve to it? Great placement of the reflected clothes stand but see below regarding the shadow. And I'm very taken with the second entry: a perfect match of the man and his reflection, and the light over the mirror is a neat touch. A brooding, powerful image. I like james' mirror and reflections, with an animation that starts with the occupier going to the mirror to make a phone call. Now sure about his reflection here - is it facing the wrong way? - but the really intriguing part comes after he walks out of shot, as we see him getting dressed only in the shadows on the wall. Remarkable! A perfect shaped mirror from GKB, complete with a rather tasty Roman mosaic on the wall. The reflection of the mosaic is in the wrong place relative to the clothes stand, though: in "reality" the mosaic is further to the left, so the reflected version should be rather more to the right than it is. I like the toothpaste tube! A small, neat mirror from Pete, accurately matching the reflected glare on the wall. Good shading on the mirror frame, and a very subtle shadow behind it. A powerful comment from micky47 - is this taken from a poster about anorexia? I like the way the dress is draped over the clothes stand, and the extra shadow of the girl on the wall. I like the fact that the mirror is leaning forward slightly, but the angle is just too strong: it looks like it's lurching off the wall. A very neatly drawn mirror from Deborah Morley, that exactly matches the apparent shape of the reflected glare. It does, however, seem a slightly odd shape for a mirror! I like the reflections, but see below for more on the reflected clothes stand shadow. A very fine mirror from Emil, with an ornate top: the basic shape matches the reflected glare well. But the reflected clothes stand shadow is an issue - see below. _____________________________ OK, time to reveal the truth. And there are a few interesting points about this. ![]() First, the reflection of the clothes stand shadow, that I've referred to several times in this write-up. The stand is a few inches in front of the wall, and the shadow is behind it and to the left. So in the reflected version, the shadow needs to be much further to the right than most would imagine. Second, the mirror itself needs to cast a shadow on the wall behind it: it's a reflection of the diffused light bouncing off the right hand wall, so it isn't very crisp. Third, the bevel on the mirror is what makes it immediately read as a mirror. It's a simple trick that, surprisingly, occurs in reality as well - and I recommend this for all your mirror work. Fourth, and most surprising of all, is that the glare from the mirror on the wall, with its distinctive shape, doesn't appear to be reflected in the mirror itself at all. I have absolutely no idea why this should be the case, and like you I would have copied it in there. All explanations gratefully received! |

It seems as if you have all received glowing (sic) reports from Steve. Well done everyone. Well deserved. I'd still like to have a go at these last two challenges. Also loved your banner Deborah. |

Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
Thanks Steve, It is interesting to see just how steep the perspective is with the real mirror. When I drew the lines to the vanishing point and saw the final shape I really felt that there was something wrong but stuck with it on the basis that your lens must have been fairly wide angle. The toothpaste tube came from Friday Challenge 117 way back in October 2006! Gordon _________________ Why is there only one word for ‘Thesaurus’? |

Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
Thanks Steve Have to say that I'm surprised having seen the real thing, particularly the square upper corners, as the reflection looks rounded. From the clues, it was very hard to guess whether the mirror was screwed to the wall, or hanging on a wire, so I opted for the former and that's why I always lose at heads and tails! I considered adding a bevel, but what it should reflect was even bigger guesswork. Like you I'm puzzled why the glare from the mirror on the wall is not as seen on the wall, unless the mirror is slightly tinted, but I don't think that would be the case with such a classic piece. An interesting one! Nick |

Thank you Steve Have to agree about the reflected angle of the head. I knew it was incorrect, but was unable to figure it out. I still haven't. |

Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
Thanks again Steve, I thought the other guys had done such a great job with frame arch, decided to deviate! ![]() Re: "All explanations gratefully received!" I might suggest, not proven, with the mirror's edge that far from wall and the virtual perspective of the reflected image, the mirror would maybe not catch the first brightest part of the reflection on the wall. Its probably difficult to percieve the remaing darker part that it would catch. Its a bit tough though, confirming exactly the virtual perspective accurately to confirm this explaination. My original construction work was not very accurate based off the partial imaged posted last Friday, so does not prove either way, maybe disproves. But if look at shadow on wall from clothes stand, it probably does confirm(?). Guess might have another go now have the real image, ...er ...cheat! ![]() Trevor |

Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
Thanks Steve for your positive comment. I did not add the 'reflection' into my mirror because logic told me that its light bouncing off the mirror, away from it, so how can it reflect whats going away from it?. Something like that anyway ![]() Interesting to see that the reflection of the clothes hanger thingy is very foreshortened, something to bear in mind for future reflections. _________________ "Drugs may be road to nowhere, but its the most scenic route" http://scrapworkart.blogspot.com/ |

Re: Challenge 308: The mirror on the wall
An interesting challenge. I thought my reflection of the stand was too big, but I would never have made it as small as the real thing, nor would I have got the shadow right. It looks like the mirror was hanging on a cord and so slightly angled. Sophie, thanks. |

Thank you Steve. It was a very interesting challenge. Im starting to warm a bit to reflections. I find myself at times exploring reflections in my own environment and the effect they have. ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
