Re: Challenge 310: Succulent Sushi
Hello everyone,

I was amazed that Steve was eating sushi.
I think he took more plates then we saw!

All the best!
Gerard

I'm in Sicily (again) with only an ancient laptop, so creating an image is a challenge in itself... However, didn't want to miss out on yet another challenge, so I quickly assembled some Italian inspired sushi.

Re: Challenge 310: Succulent Sushi
Hope you all enjoyed your diet this week. I think my liking for sushi has just taken a bit of a dip.

First to fill the plates was GKB, who has sliced and diced that cute clownfish from Finding Nemo - tasty! I like the different approaches, and especially the beautifully drawn covers on two of the bowls. Spot of refraction through the covers would help a little, otherwise a great image!

LonnieK's sushi is definifely far from raw - this is about as deep-fried as we can get. But look how well it fits the perspective: all the plates have been replaced, there's a fresh salad in the corner, and even a pot of tartare sauce. And I do like that embroidered napkin.

Very tasteful sushi from tooquilos, with decorative flowers. A haiku is always very welcome! I like the blurring of the dishes on the conveyor belt - and when we see the animated version, we can see why. A clever attempt at movement - but perhaps if the colours of the bowls circulated with the belt it would get the point across more strongly? Most impressed with the sushi-making actions in the second half - and what a fine result!

Very taken with brewell's Extreme Sushi - so let's see, we've got oil-gushing BP logos, fresh eyeballs, and radioactive sushi. Delicious!

A novel approach to raw fish from Ben Mills: well, she's certainly at least half a fish, and she's almost certainly raw. Has her arm already been nibbled? Or has she just lost her sunglasses in that pile of rice?

Lovingly handmade sushi from vibeke - and what an extraordinary job. Look at all the detail: the tapered, square-ended chopsticks; the delicate texture on the salmon; the wrinkled texture of the seaweed; the fine grains of rice; even a little heap of wasabi next to a bowl of soya sauce. A fantastic job - must have taken you hours!

I had to watch james's video several times to catch all the action: the crab claw nipping the cat's tail, the pulsating fish, the raspberry rolling off the pile... and, of course, the movement of the cat itself. Most entertaining. But no luck with the conveyor belt itself, James? Ah, there we go - it's all moving splendidly in the second entry. That must have taken you a while! Very neat motion, I especially like the detail of the shadows.

Some well-matched extra plates from Gerard. I had to check up on the tennis player, though, and it turns out it's the mascot for the 2012 Olympics here in London... good grief! It's ghastly! Still, it does have a vaguely fishy quality to it!

Very colourful sushi from Josephine Harvatt, which seems to be made entirely from stationery - the sushi is made from erasers, piles of paperclips, pencils and pencil shavings. I do like the paintbrush chopsticks. So, let me guess - you were looking around your studio for inspiration...

Some genuine sushi from Carlo Alessandro Della Valle, all fitting rather neatly onto the plates. The shadows on the left are a little too strong, perhaps: and there's a plate left empty! Good to see you back.

Sushi's revenge from Deborah Morley - and what a fantastic piece of work it is. The cracked-open counter surface, the flying plates, sushi and chopsticks, and the powerful angle of the shark - a really startling, arresting image. Very good stuff!

Some very Italian sushi from Eva Roth, with more pasta than raw fish: but it fits so well on those little mounds of rice that I really can't complain. I like the extra detail, including the plastic covers - but a bit more shine needed on these to give them more presence.

Very fine work.

Thanks Steve,
I took the challenge, 100%PS seems to have taught me something.
