Re: Challenge 337: Upon reflection
As technical challenges go, this was certainly one of the harder ones. Congratulations to all those who entered, and took on this tricky problem. First up was tuffpup who, having only recently joined the forum, must be wondering what he's let himself in for. Good rippling, and a good stab at tinting the alternate rows. The left hand side of the building needs to be precisely vertical, though, which means aligning exactly with the Quark building - and there are plenty of verticals in the windows to help with the alignment. Better tinting on the second entry - but is the ripple effect a little too strong? More restrained rippling from bjansen, with tinted bars that neatly match the colour on the building in the corner. This is very close! Great colour from brewell, but of course what grabs our attention here is Godzilla creeping up in the background. A subtle, effective entry! A whole new sky from LonnieK, complete with matching reflection. The building is well distorted and tinted - I particularly like the way the reflection is broken down by individual panes of glass, which adds a lot of extra realism (although they should probably sack their glazier). A towering building from gaoxiguo - I like the way it is higher than the Quark building. But has it all turned rather grey? Happy new year to you too! A very cool Sydney by night from tooquilos, although without the Opera House it's hard to recognise... I really like the way the fireworks in the animated version are reflected in the windows... but I would like to have seen one or two of those windows lighting up, too. 43 centigrade? You realise we're in the middle of winter here, right? Good rippling from Garfield72, if perhaps a little over-enthusiastic - and a good job of straightening up the building to match the perspective. The difference in tint could be stronger - look at the effect the coloured glass is having on the building in the corner. A bit of a House of Horrors from Eggbox, with a building that's looking decidedly shaky on the right: do you think the ripple wavelength should be greater than the height of each window? I really like the man waving from that upper balcony - you're the first to make use of that, Ted. A clever and surreal entry from emanuelefrau, whose giant hand is moving the building into place - or is it about to take it away? Good tinting, but given the brightness of the day, are the hand and the building a little dark? A neat recolouring of the whole reflected building from vibeke, giving it a decidedly brownstone feel. I can't see any rippling here - or if there is some, then it's very subtle! But this is (nearly) very convincing - see the original below. "It is a very challenging Challenge," says puffin31939 - and you're absolutely right. This is a good attempt, but you do need to keep the verticals in the reflection more vertical: and the top of the building should be parallel with the top of the Quark building. There's something about this that suggests a fishtank! So Ben Mills is no fan of geometry - well, fair enough. I'm just glad you didn't turn to architecture for a profession. Nice tinting, though! A good job of straightening the building from 2tonezack, and the tinting works well - but that rippling effect is too strong, and perhaps too detailed. That makes the glass look as if it's made of syrup! Good colour from tomiloi, but you do need to keep those vertical edges vertical - check out the left hand side. I like the subtlety of the distortion. This is nearly there. I greatly enjoyed sutex's entry, turning the whole building into a rippling aquarium - interesting approach! I especially like the way the building reverts to straight at the bottom. And that life guard is a good addition! I know we have a tradition of not competing in this Challenge, but if this one did have a winner it would be Deborah Morley. Why? Because she's the only one to recognise that, from the angle we're viewing it, we'd be able to see the side of the reflected building as well as the front. It takes a huge leap of imagination to recognise this fact; actually achieving the reconstruction, using just parts of the existing building, is another huge feat again. Congratulations, Deborah - you've really nailed this one! There's something about Emil's entry that looks highly realistic: I don't know if it;s the colour, or the subtlety of the reflected ripples, but it really does look as if it belongs there. Now, if only you'd added the side on the building... Good rippling and tinting from Jota120 - but, Trevor, you've made the cardinal mistake of not aligning the verticals! Use those lines between the Quark windows as your guide for getting this perspective right! I'm really sorry computer problems made us lose James's entry this week - it looks like it must have been a cracking animation! ________________________________ So, it's the moment of truth. As only Deborah Morley recognised, the key to getting this one right lies in recognising that from the new angle of view, we'd be able to see the side of the reflected building as well as the front. You all did a good job of tinting the building, and the rippling was carried out with some high degree of enthusiasm: only Brewell saw that each pane of glass needs to ripple independently, and this makes all the difference. So, to put you all out of your misery, here's the original: ![]() |

Thanks Steve, there was some rippling in my image but probably too subtle. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 337: Upon reflection
Great efforts from everyone. I just didn't have time this week and, like Sutex, I found an almost identical image by searching 'Quark Building Denver'. It would have been a real cheat to base an answer on that. So you see, there is still some honesty left in this world! Nick |

Re: Challenge 337: Upon reflection
Thanks for the comments, Steve. Perhaps I should have added some fish! I never considered whether the verticals should remain vertical. I was far too busy trying to make the building ripple like the one on the left and working on the colour. I haven't an artistic bone in my body. Sooo much to learn! _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Thanks again Steve, I spotted the error after posted it. Too late to fix. That's what happens if make rushed last minute entry and no research/checking and subsequent reflection ![]() |

Separating the grid of windows to work on each one separately may be useful to someone someday, so I posted my method in the Reader's Tutorial section. _________________ The journey of a thousand hours begins with a single layer. |
