My entry this week. A bit rushed and nothing too fancy. I don't like working on raw meat so i thought of another setup. ![]() _________________ Let's go the lab. Gotta Blast! |

Re: Challenge 347: Moroccan butcher
A lot of imagination shown this week, and some truly startling entries - a very entertaining bunch. First in was sutex, whose picture relates an anecdote from 1992. All very convincingly done, with the vodka bottles neatly behind the glass. I like the fact that the boots have shine on opposite sides, which makes them hang that much more convincingly - a nice touch. But is the portrait of Lenin too bright? Look at the cooler cabinet: that's white as well, so that's the brightest the white in the picture should be. A splendidly conceived McDonalds from tooquilos, complete with Coke, cheeseburgers, a menu on the wall and an extraordinary version of the logo reworked in an Arabic script. Great extra touches, such as the hanging utensils, the wallpaper and the darkening effect through the glass - and that ornate frame adds a lot to the overall effect. I like the way the utensils are knocked about in the animated version - and a couple of great characters at the end. Beautifully done, Anna. A touch of politcs from michael sinclair - and there's Ghadaffi wielding his chainsaw, surrounded by the carcasses of... pigs? Are you sure? Perfectly gory, the only thing that bothers me is the pig's head on the left - surely it should be behind the display case, not in front? A realistic image from puffin31939, with animal parts convincingly hanging from the hooks and a well-stocked glass case. But look at the far right: the hook rail is behind the hanging saw, which is behind the shop window. So how can the items hooked on that rail be hanging outside the front of the shop? I do like the overall effect, though, which brings a strong sense of texture into the image. A laughed out loud at brewell's entry, with the whole Sesame Street gang slaughtered and up for sale... great touches, such as the X in each eye, a standard cartoon way of representing death. A solid piece of politics, nicely conceived. Just one thing: should Big Bird's feet be projecting above the hooks like that? Another topical reference, this time from GKB: you're clearly not a fan of the Libyan regime, Gordon. The font you've used looks more Hebrew than Arabic - is that intentional? Good lumps of meat, although I'm not sure you can get away with black dots for flies... perhaps a custom fly brush is needed, with random rotation? A good gag, though, but I must point out that the No Fly Zone notice shouldn't be brighter than the white surface it's attached to. A clever political statement from Josephine Harvatt, with everything relating to UK Health Minister Andrew Lansley's mishandling of the National Health Service. I like the blood bags hanging from the hooks, and the wording on all the notices - and that shifty look in Lansley's eyes is terrific. Good ideas here. Marrakech isn't so far from Casablanca, as PDelavigne points out - and there's Bogie standing in for the butcher, as well as appearing in local dress. Has he gone native? I like the fact that this is an Arabic version, "as seen on Al Jazeera"... a clever reworking of the poster. A spot of realism from Garfield72, with all the meat hanging just as it should, and the butcher wielding a rather fearsome cleaver. The poster in the back is too bright, though, for the shadow in the rear of the store - the surface it's on is white as well. And there's something about those sausages that doesn't quite work: too strong? Too well defined? They need to be pushed back behind the glass. Perhaps simply desaturating them will do the job. I like the new ornate canopy - a very cool addition. Beautiful, inspiring and fabulously detailed work from Daniel this week, in which the pigs really have taken over the store. There's so much detail in here it's hard to know where to start - all the hanging guitars, the pig reflection behind him, the graffiti, the smashed wine bottle with the Marlboro pack seen through it, the bottle of Jack Daniels in the fish tank, and the crack on the tank glass, the burning cigarette... and, of course, the glorious pigs themselves. Where did they come from? Did you create them in Poser? One tiny thing: the Marlboro pack should be more refracted seen through the bottle; and glass doesn't break like that! Otherwise, a strong and truly powerful image. Really excellent work, Daniel. A great gag in Ben Mills' entry, with Morocco's only halal pork butcher selling, er, vegetarian sausages - and there they are, all hanging from the rail. A great gag, and I like the pseudo Arabic font, as well as the shop owner's name (for those of you not familiar with British wartime slang, a 'karzi' was another word for a toilet). "Eat long and prosper", says zombie67's Spock butcher, in an image that's loaded with sci-fi references - such as the dismembered alien and pieces of ET hanging from the hooks, and is that the worm from Dune? I like the reference to the multiplying furballs fromTrouble with Tribbles, possibly the silliest Star Trek episode ever made. You can always tell a vegetarian by their fondness for gore... and Eva Roth clearly doesn't look at a piece of meat and think "mmm, delicious". This blood-spattered image is a powerful anti-carnivore statement - and it's beautifully achieved, from the graffiti on the front of the case to the perfect blood on the walls. The thing is, Eva, it's their own fault for tasting so good. A very strong image from Marty, who has packed the case with meat and hung more from the hooks. A clever idea here to add another row of hooks right in the front, in order to hang a pig's head and more sausages from it - and that knife is perfectly wielded in his hand. Excellent work, Marty. Good work from tissana, with a fully stocked case - but are the objects in the case too small? Are those chickens or pigeons? I like the opened door, but I'm not sure about the light bulb - or the fact that it's only casting light down, rather than in all directions. A well stocked shop, though, and everything nicely toned in. From butcher to fishmonger - a really funny image from emanuelefrau. I'm not sure why this tickled me so much, but there is something hilarious about that oversized fish. The only thing that bothers me is that it's centre of gravity seems a little way over to the right... I'd rotate it about 15 degrees clockwise for a more plausible hanging position. Excellent work from nerdtron, who has completely refitted the butcher into a music store. And it's a perfect conversion: the glass case now holds CDs, as does the cooler unit; the speakers on the walls, the headphones hanging from hooks, the iMac showing iTunes in the foreground, and the subtle recolouring of the walls... immaculate, beautifully executed work, Neth, and certainly enough to earn you an overdue title. So let's see... I think it has to be Neutron Neth since you're a Jimmy Neutron fan. Excellent work! There's a real sense of foreboding in Deborah Morley's work - you just know that cuddly lamb is for the chop (and, indeed, for the chops). A subtle and clever image, with a great use of that butcher's hand. "I hope you know what it means", says Emil. Well now... that's the Grim Reaper, with the dismembered parts of a motorbike rider who I'm sure I should recognise. Whoever he is, he certainly has come to a sticky end... a powerful image, if perhaps a little on the disgusting side. But then I asked for it, I suppose. A terrific alternative from BigVern, whose monkey butcher, naturally enough, stocks only bananas and apples. A great pile in the case, and I like the reflection of the leering chimp - too big, perhaps? The photo from the kids TV show Bananas in Pyjamas is a really nice touch. __________________________ Excellent entries, full of imagination. But it's interesting to see how Western our view of butchered meat is. You'd think all butchers would look the same the world over, but when I was in Marrakech a couple of years ago I took another photo of a butcher's shop. I was struck by the differences in presentation - this is certainly a very different kind of presentation: ![]() |
