Re: Challenge 353: The animal store
I was hugely amused by this week's entries - and impressed by the uniform skill shown. Not an easy set of cutouts, by any means! First to fill the cages was tooquilos, with a great assortment of stuffed tigers. Terrific choice and placement! Of course, that's the only soundtrack you could have chosen in the animated version - and a clever reference to the accident that ended Siegfried & Roy's career. A startling array of giant ants from brewell, all neatly behind bars - although I like the way bits of them project through the cages. Close attention to shading really makes them look as if they belong in there - nice work. A host of wildlife from vibeke, from geese to peacocks - very nicely inserted. THe shadows on the walls behind them work really well, and the shadows of the bars on the animals are a very realistic addition - but because the animals are curved, not flat, these shadows really need to bend around them. Not as hard as it sounds: a couple of minute with Image Warp would do the trick, and you could probably use the same set of bars for several animals. Very fine work from LagoDiLecco, with the boy's older brother imprisoned in one of the cages. What I really like here is the subtlety of the placement: you have to look twice before you see him. Plus, of course, the great choice of pose and the shading. Good stuff. Exotic beasts from PDelavigne, ranging from straightforward poppy dogs to an iguana, and - a giant hamster? I like the parrot, and its shadow neatly matches that of the pigeon next to it. The decapitated puppy is a little unnerving, though. Funny work from Jimbean, with a motley collection of entertaining beasts. There's a great sense of fun here, from the quid-like thing on the counter to the Sesame Street (?) monster in the foreground - and is he tossing a spoon over his head? Very nicely chosen beasts, and really well slotted behind those bars. I thought Eva Roth was filling her cages with oversized chickens, but it turns out they're white kiwis... I hadn't heard of these before, but they're certainly cute. Are they really that big? Sorry to hear you still have limited access to Photoshop, Eva... glad you managed to find the time to fit this one in. It's that meercat again... for those who live outside the UK, you thankfully won't recognise the animal in Ben Mills's post, which is from a commercial for car insurance. A great selection of other animals, too, neatly arranged - and I do like the overall graphic style, which produces a stark yet warm effect. Extraordinary work from joeysala, who has filled the cages with tiny multicoloured naked people. The blankness of the heads gives them an extra twist, and I like the way the blue one has a leg reaching through the bars... powerful stuff! A strong statement from bjansen, with the most politically incorrect assembly of rare beasts - and I like the 'daily specials' board. Close attention to lighting makes this work particularly well: those penguins under the counter really look as if they belong there, and all the animals appear well located in their cages. Now if you could just add shadows of the bars to them... An interesting entry from horongo, in which everything is desaturated apart from the added animals. I like the placement of the rabbit and the chameleon, and the desaturation does produce a stark quality to the image. A tremendous mixing of scales from jimstrummer, from giant snails to tiny elephants. But it's the people that amuse me the most - that cheesy white-suited singer, and the cowboy trying to shoot the elephant. A fair stab at placing shadows of the bars over them, as well, resulting in a funny, well conceived image. Nice! Hilarious work from Josephine Harvatt, with cages very nearly filled with babies - and a caption that makes perfect sense of the original scene. Excellent choice of pseudo-Arabic font, too: all that's missing is an exhausted stork. Where's your baby collection from? Stunning work from Daniel, whose cartoon rats are breaking out of one of the cages, climbing down a rope and running along the counter before busting out through a hole in the glass. The real genius is that we can hardly see the scene due to the reflection of the cheese shop opposite. The result is that you really have to look hard to see all the detail in this image. Expertly removed people, as well, making this a really powerful entry that’s full of depth and intrigue. Fantastic. A fine selection of exotic beasties from puffin31939, and I like the fact that the people have been replaced by that couple from thefullmontage... the three wise monkeys are a really funny addition, all the more so because they aren't all in a row. But shadows needed on the walls behind! An unusually static entry from James, that's so well put together it took me a moment to notice the expert removal of the original people. That took some doing! I like the placemennt of all the animals, and the shadows are nicely judged. Is the woman just a touch too small, though? Muammar Gaddafi crops up again in michael sinclair's entry, in an extraordinary scene of carnage. Clever work placing those chickens at the front, which meant you only had to rebuild a small number of bars when removing the original people. And as you say, a good appreciation of the original lighting in the scene. Only the perspective on the chopper stands out as being unrealistic: from this distance, you'd get nothing like that extreme a distortion. A clever entry from Jota120, with a pair of lizards choosing their next meal (or so it seems - that tongue is a sure sign). Again, clever placement meant that there wasn't an inordinate amount of retouching to be done when removing the original people. Good job. A funny collection of animals from Marty, all neatly placed behind the bars: I like the penguin, the Furby, the rubber duck and the Denver bear from a few weeks back. Detailed and well judged work, Marty - very good stuff. Some colourful animals from Garfield72, but their small scale does make them look lonely in those cages. I like the snake - but do snakes eat parrots? And surely those birds could get out through that wide bar spacing? Some well-placed zebu from Deborah Morley - now there's a beast I never thought I'd see one of them again. I like the way you've tucked one behind the woman, it really integrates them well into the scene; and the replacing of the child with a beaver (coypu?) is very well achieved. Very entertaining work this week! |

Bother! bother! Bother! So busy cutting out bars and finding animals that I never even thought about shadows on walls or of bars. One day it will all come together... I hope. Re: Challenge 353: The animal store
Thanks for your comments, Steve! I didn't know the white variety either until I read about them last Friday morning. See also Vibeke's post. My PS access is only limited when I'm in Sicily as my Mac here is on its last leg. Half the functions don't work and only a touch pad for cutting out, masking off etc doesn't help either. Marginally better than a photocopier though... |

Thanks for your kind words Steve, I had a lot of fun with this one and instruction from chapter 3 in your book made the masking easy. _________________ Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can. ~Danny Kaye |
